SMART PLANET 2
Ben Goldstein & Ceri Jones

First Cycle of Secondary Education

Lesson Programme

Smart Planet 2 is divided into nine units as well as an introductory unit. Furthermore, units 2, 5 and 9 include two lessons about doing the project and units 3, 6 and 9 include the Get it Right section, designed to address Spanish pupils specific problems, a revision unit for the previous three units.

This Lesson Programme has been drawn up for use throughout the academic year at bilingual educational centres or at schools where more hours are spent learning English than the minimum established by the Spanish educational system. Each teacher can adapt the programme to his/her needs and those of his/her centre.

In 2nd ESO, each unit consists of five lessons of 45 to 50 minutes every week.

1st term: Units 0, 1, 2 and 3 .

2nd term: Units 4, 5 and 6 .

3rd term: Units 7, 8 and 9.

Each table in this Lesson Programme suggests how to use the activities in the Student's Book (SB), Work Book (WB) and others parts of Smart Planet during a lesson. They also reflect the general and specific objectives of each objective such as competences, types of interaction, competences developed and the materials required for that purpose. The abbreviations used are:

Competences

CO - Oral Comprehension

OE - Oral Expression

RC - Reading Comprehension

WE - Writing Expression

Interaction:

Ind - individual

P - in pairs

SG - small groups

LG - large group, the whole class

Competences

LC - Linguistic Communication

MSCT- Mathematical competence and basic science and technology competences.

DC - Digital competences

LL - Learning to Learn

SCS - Social and Civic Competences.

SIE - Sense of Initiative and Entrepreneurship

CCE - Cultural Conscience and Expressions.

At the end of each lesson there are optional activities in the Teacher’s Book (grammar, vocabulary, writing, reading, dictations, translation, various different communication activities) which the teacher may use if there is time, giving priority to those which reinforce the most needed structures, vocabulary and competences.

In the Reinforcement-Extension / Homework* column activities are added for different purposes:

1.  Reinforcing parts of the unit which are not clear or which are difficult.

2.  Giving pupils who learn slowly more chance to practice.

3.  Allowing faster pupils to reinforce and extend their knowledge without getting bored.

Some of these activities may be used in class and others can be given as homework (marked with *).

Pupils also have a Workbook Audio, on which they can listen to all the audio comprehension activities and dictations.

El Smart Resources DVD-ROM (TRD) from the Teacher’s Resource Book (TRB) also includes grammar and vocabulary exercises on two levels, exercises for increasing vocabulary and activities for more advanced pupils which may also appear in this column as reinforcement and further learning activities if they have not been used during each lesson.

The Student´s DVD-ROM includes 36 videos from Discovery Education which offer authentic material adapted to the pupils' language standard and four comprehension exercises per unit which can be done at home and self-corrected. The AICLE (CLIL) pages come with their own videos. The Teacher's Resources Disk (TRD) also includes printable, photocopiable extra material for using with the videos.

The Smart Planet Augmented Reality App provides the pupils with all the videos, answers for the interactive activities and grammar exercises. Pupils only have to visit www.smartplanetapp.es and download it onto their tablet or mobile phone.

The evaluation tables at the end of each unit reflect the activities at the end of each lesson which can be used to evaluate different competences. The teacher can use these and others to observe pupils' progress, or choose specific options to evaluate the whole unit, although to do the latter we recommend using the Tests included in the Teacher's Resource Disc (TRD). An evaluation lesson is recommended at least once per unit.
