Data Extracted: Wed May 23 11:17:38 2012

Crews have attended 137 fires this year with 36 occurring in domestic properties.

The main cause of fires in the home is cooking, accounting for over 60% of incidents, with electrical defects causing over 20%. Many of these fires are preventable and we use a range of prevention techniques to reduce the impact of fire on the community.

Work is carried out to identify those at greatest risk in the community with key demographic groups identified and prevention work focused towards their needs. We also continue work to reduce risk in geographic areas that statistically suffer greater numbers of fires. This approach is working with both fire numbers and fire severity reducing.

Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service staff continue to provide free Home Fire Safety Checks, fitting smoke alarms where required and providing invaluable advice on what to do in the event of fire. Visits will be arranged at a time to suit the recipient and will be carried out by in-service personnel who will produce their identification card on arrival. To arrange a free Home Fire Safety Check, simply telephone 0800 169 1125 or contact your nearest Fire Station.

HFSC’s

Our Community Fire Safety Teams work will continue in the wards with the Operational Crews relocating resources to increase the amount of work locally, tailored to the increase in risk and activity levels.

REMEMBER - Cooking and alcohol don’t mix!1 in 3 people who die in a house fire have had a drink.
