Simplex®4100U – The Where Used Feature
This is the next in a series of bulletins to highlight some helpful product features in the 4100U that you may not be aware exist.
Where Used
The Where Used feature of the 4100U Programmer enables you to identify all the lists and custom control equations which include a specific point. “It makes my job a lot easier.” Senior Technician Bill Bedore (Hartford/129) tells us, “The feature probably saves me a few hours on trying to figure out how someone else programmed a point.”
How it works: To bring up the Where Used option in the Programmer, simply right-click on any point on a screen that shows points or lists. A pop-up menu that includes Where Used is displayed. Select Where Used to display a dialog box showing the usage of the point.
Benefit: Whether you are adding a point to lists of similar existing points, trying to determine why a point is not responding when you think it should, deleting a point, or troubleshooting, knowing the usage of a point is critical to your success. Dale Wrightam (Little Rock/270), Service Supervisor, recalls “Recently we had a program we were debugging and could not figure out why a point was acting a certain way. We used this feature and found out it was in an additional list. We removed it and the program ran as written.” Dale agrees with Bill that use of this feature saves hours.
Additional info: Programmer Help provides information about the Where Used feature. During Tyco Safety Products Institute classroom training, students have an opportunity to use this tool during lab exercises. Some technicians will recall that Where Used was available as a report in the 4100+ Programmer.
Conclusion: When you need to modify a system, Senior Technician Tim Whittaker (Grand Rapids/327) says that in addition to saving time, Where Used enables him “to determine how a system may be adversely affected by modifications of particular points.” He says that this saves time when you are programming and keeps you from “being surprised in front of an AHJ when you are testing devices.”
Whether you are troubleshooting, modifying a system, or debugging a program, Where Used can save you time and effort.
