WARMING WARNING FOR ANTARCTICA

The face of Antarctica will change in the next 100 years as ice melts, penguins move south and green plants begin to colonise bare rocks of the Antarctic, researchers warned.

1 Climate has always changed. But the change now is really fast and could lead to unexpected consequences, warn the British Antarctic Survey. In 100 years' time the Southern ocean atmosphere will be warmer, with much less ice and snow on the peninsula. Green plants are already five or even ten times more common now than when explorers built the first bases.

2 Seals and whales will change the place where they feed. The penguins are already moving south to breed (have their young), perhaps because warmer air means more snow. The penguin doesn't want to sit on a nest and have a metre of snow above it.

3 Many Antarctic organisms are sensitive to very small changes in temperature, so if some of the more extreme changes of temperature in the sea occur, it is likely that we will have some extinctions.

4 Antarctic is the world's last remaining wilderness region. It is larger than the US and drier than the Sahara. Parts of it are covered by up to 3,000 metres of ice and snow, and the continent stores nine tenths of the world's fresh water.

5 The mainland is still unspoiled, but the Southern ocean has been exploited for 200 years by whalers, sealers, commercial fishermen, and most recently, tourists. Last year 13,500 tourists visited the region in cruise ships. This season the number could reach 27,000.

With the words “Elementary, my dear Watson...”, the most famous detective of all times, Sherlock Holmes, starts to explain something to his friend, Dr. Watson. That phrase has now entered the English language.

Conan Doyle started the fashion of the detective story, which goes on.

And what sort of man is Sherlock Holmes? We learn a lot about him from the stories in which he appears. He is a quiet man, who only speaks when he has something to say. He smokes a pipe (he has a collection of them). He plays the violin. He carries a large magnifying glass. He lives at 221B Baker Street in London.

If you go to London, you will not be able to find 221B Baker Street. But instead, you can go to a pub called the “Sherlock Holmes”. I that pub there is a room exactly like Sherlock Holmes's room at 221B Baker Street as described in Conan Doyle's stories.

Welcome to London, one of the most exciting cities in the world. There are a lot of things to see and to do in London. Here are some ideas.

1 London has many beautiful old buildings and monuments. See Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, which stand on the river Thames near Westminster Abbey. Go down the river to the Tower of London? And visit St. Paul's Cathedral too.

2 People come from all over the world to visit the BritishMuseum. For art lovers, the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square has a beautiful collection of paintings, and so has the Tate Gallery in Westminster.

3 Go to Oxford Street, where there are several large department stores. If you like small shops, there is an attractive shopping centre in Covent Garden. And London has over 100 street markets.

4 London is well known for its many centres: try and get tickets for the National Theatre, a modern building containing three theatres on the south bank of the Thames.

5 If you like classical music, go to a concert at the Royal Albert Hall or the Royal Festival Hall. You can hear excellent jazz at Ronnie Scott's club in Soho.

6 London has many excellent restaurants, serving food from almost every country in the world. Go to Soho or Charlotte Street, try food at Italian, French, Chinese, Indian, Greek... sometimes it's hard to find an English restaurant.

Text 2

Have you ever attended Eisteddfod?

No, I haven't. What is it?

It's the most exciting Welsh tradition festival devoted to music and poetry.

When is it held?

Annually in August.

Is it an old custom to hold this festival?

Oh, yes. This tradition dates back to early history, and there are records of competitions for Welsh poets and musicians in the 12th century.

When did you attend it last?

This year when my uncle invited me to stay at his house in Caernarvon. We got up early in the morning and went to a large grassy field just outside the town.

Were there many people there?

Oh, yes! The streets were full of people and in the field there was a large crowd round a circle of big stones with an 'altar stone' in the middle.

What this altar stone used for?

The Chief Druid stepped on the altar stone and made a long speech in Welsh. I didn't understand a word of it but the audience loved it.

Were there any songs or poems performed?

Yes, there were. A great number of songs and poems. And at the end of the festival there was a very interesting ceremony of awarding the bard of the year.

You mean the winner of the competition?

Yea. He was awarded the prize. It was the Crown, specially made for the occasion.

I think I should go there next year. I like ancient traditions, besides I've never been to Wales.

Jesuismalade

Alceste part. Je suis bien triste, je l’aime beaucoup. Alceste est mon copain et on s’est bien amusé.
