A Note of Interest: “+” or “-“grades are not likely to be given.

A Note on Course Discussion Style:Discussions and examples, both in class and online, are often intended to be thought provoking, even challenging to established points of view, but they are not intended to project bias or prejudice. Open expression is very important in graduate education. You are encouraged to express your thoughts in person and on-line. Also, you are encouraged to speak with the professor privately if you have concerns in this regard.

Production/Writing Guidelines: All submitted work must conform to APA publication guidelines. The APA style guide (see above) is available at most bookstores. It is also available in the library.Several web sites also offer some unofficial(occasionally, incomplete) APA style help.

Missed and Late Assignments: Late assignments are not accepted. Any special arrangements must be made before the scheduled class activity (except in the case of an extreme emergency). Such arrangements must be based on very strong need. In-class submissions are due at the BEGINNING of the class period.

Discussion Vignettes:Objective  high insight, low overhead “what, so what, now what”activity intended to produce reflection, insight, and discussion.

Each student will submit (through D2L) eleven“discussion vignettes” based on assigned readings. Each submission is strictly limited to a maximum of 175 words. Use only your three-digit class identification number to identify the posting (for example, “5XX”). All submissions are due before noon on the assigned day. It is expected that each student will review the submissions ofall other students prior to the beginning of class.

A successful discussion vignette is a provocative discussion vignette. It should represent the intellectual intersection between the student and the content of the reading. It may take many forms, including (but not limited to) exploration, extension, contention, and suggestion, et al.There are many ways to create an unsuccessful discussion vignette, but restating or summarizing the assignment is the most common. Work experience reflections are also unsuccessful.

Contemporary Reading Presentation: Objective  introduce the applied contemporary business literature and develop “elevator speech” (no props, PowerPoints, etc.)skills.

Eachstudent will select one contemporary business book from a list supplied and create a brief YouTube video presentation ((2 minutes or less - with URL posted in D2L for classmates to view) and facilitate an on-line discussion of it.

7 Habits Applied Presentation: Objective  provide an opportunity to critically reflect on the application of the 7 Habits material and further develop “elevator speech” (no props, PowerPoints, etc.)skills.

Each student will create a brief YouTube video presentation ((2 minutes or less - with URL posted in D2L for classmates to view) and facilitate an on-line discussion of the application of the “7 Habits” material to practice – either personal or professional.

Podcast Exploration and Discussion: Objective  develop abilities in continuing learning through on-line resources.

Each person will find an appropriate podcast linked to an assigned topic and post (in D2L, along with the URL of the podcast) an executive summary of 150 words or less that both informs the reader and promotes the podcast.

The podcast is not limited to project management sources but is limited to topics appropriate to project management. Podcasts used in another class in any way (as an assignment, a submission, or otherwise) cannot be used. There is no minimum or maximum standard for expected length; however, long podcasts (over 25 minutes) are discouraged.

The activity will be evaluated based on the appropriateness of the podcast to the assigned topic, the quality of the executive summary (delivery and content – it should inform and entice), and the quality of the resulting on-line discussion.

IT Project Management Literature Activity: Objective engage in the thoughtful examination of significant IT Project Management literature and develop skill in differentiating between scholarly and trade press literature sources.

In 100 words or less, discuss the difference between “scholarly” publications (may also be referred to as peer reviewed or refereed) and “trade press” publications.Recommend a single (one only), significant IT project management “scholarly” article. Correctly cite the article according to the APA Style Guide and briefly summarize it and explain why you recommend it in 100 words or less.Recommend a single (one only), significant IT project management “trade press” article. Correctly cite the article according to the APA Style Guide and briefly summarize it and explain why you recommend it in 100 words or less.

The student should not discuss either their process or selections with other students, including articles or publications considered. Delivery, including grammar and style, will be a factor in evaluating the assignment.

Project Management Challenges Annotated Bibliography: Objective  engage in the examination of project management literature relevant to either “Communication Challenges in Project Management” or “The Challenges of Virtual Teams in Project Management” and make an informed decision about the quality and applicability of the source documents used.

Each student will produce an annotated bibliography, including the use of proper APA style, on an appropriate project management related topic. It must include at least seven refereed journal articles (trade press articles may not be used) from at least four (more preferably) different publications (meaning different journals, not just different editions).

Class Contribution and Responsibility: Every student is expected to participate in every class and every on-line discussion. Active engagement in on-line activities is expected and emphasized. Points will be deducted from the “Class Contribution and Responsibility” grade for failure to meet this expectation (there will be some minor allowance for occasional exceptions).

Academic Honesty Policy: The essence of every student's work must always be original. This does not preclude either shared learning experiences (when appropriate), or building on previous learning experiences (by approval). Violation of the policy on original work will result in an "F" for the entire class (not just the offending assignment).
