Online contains full color physical maps, political maps as well as key facts and statistics on countries of the world.

Library of Congress Map Collections 1500 – 2004.

Geography and Map Division holds more than 4.5 million items. The focus of Map Collections: 1544 - 1996 is Americana and Cartographic Treasures of the Library of Congress.

FEEFHS (Federation of East European Family History Societies) East European Map Room has a 51-map collection from the Comprehensive Atlas and Geography of the World that covers almost all of central and Eastern Europe, including all of the German Empire and the Russian Empire. This includes European Russia (east to the Urals) and trans-Ural Asian Russia (Siberia and the Pacific).

U.S. Surname Distribution Maps - Data is from the 1850, 1880, 1920 Census, and 1990's phone books. This map is helpful when trying to determine a starting point for genealogy projects.

Odden’s Bookmarks - The Fascinating World of Maps, Mapping & Gazetters(Like Cyndi’s List).

Arizona State University Libraries: Place Names on the Internet. This site is easier to use than Odden’s, but not as complete.

State University Libraries: Map Collection

Cohen, Saul B. editor. The Columbia Gazetteer of North America, NY ColumbiaUniversity Press, 2000. This book, along with others, isavailable to use for free online.

Cyndi’s list of Genealogical Map Gazetteers & Geographical Information on the Internet.

A great place to start looking for foreign geographic names.

U.S. Geological Survey Geographical Names Information Service. Reflects current and some historical place names found on USGS topographic maps. The site contains information for almost 2 million physical and cultural geographic features in the United States and its territories.

RootsWeb Town/County Locator

All about the Sanborn Fire Maps.

The Maps section displays seven Periods of World History with many links to dozens of regional maps.

Google Earth puts a planet's worth of imagery and other geographic information right on your desktop. View your own house and land andsee what the village looks like today that your ancestors came from. (There is a free version and a subscription version)
