Finding Journal Articles using Summon

This video will show you how to find journal articles using Summon.

Start at the Library homepage: http://www.bradford.ac.uk/library .

Summon is the default search box at the top of the library homepage.

Enter keywords only into the search box.

In this case we are looking for items about the early detection of cancer.

Summon will search for any items which contain ALL the keywords you have entered.

If you wish to search for a phrase enclose the words you wish to find located together within quotation marks.

If looking for a specific journal article you could enter words from the article title and an author's surname if known.

Once you have decided on your search terms click GO to search Summon. Remember by using different search terms you will get different results. Sometimes you will need to redo your search using other words.

If off campus you will be presented with the option to log into Summon at the top left of the screen. Click on this link to log in.

You will then be given log in screen. Log in with your Bradford username and password. You don't need to log into Summon on campus.

Results are sorted by relevance in the first instance, if preferred you can sort by date.

Sometimes specific databases may be recommended at the top.

If interested in finding Journal articles look at the “Refine Your Search options” on the left and under “Content Type” select “Journal Article”.

Also, if looking for journal articles it might be a good idea to select the option “Scholarly & Peer Review” in order to refine to the more academic articles.

You could also initially select “Full Text Online” to refine to articles which will be available for you to view in full as they are part of Bradford's online journal collection.

Scroll down and look at the articles found.

The article title is given first, then the author or authors. Underneath the author is the journal title, then the year, the volume number and finally the issue number of the article.

To go to the full article click on "Full Text Online".

The link should take you to the correct article.

Click on PDF to open the printable document format. The document can now be saved or printed.

Click on Summon tab to go back to the Summon search.

If you wish to add the reference to a temporary folder click on the plus symbol which is available at the right hand side of the item record.

We are now going to look for a second item.

This one looks useful possibly.

On this occasion the link takes us to an intermediary screen, called SFX.

Take a look at any full-text available links offered. This one goes to Elsevier ScienceDirect.

Sometimes the SFX screen will show that full-text is NOT available through Bradford online journal subscriptions.

In such cases it is worth double checking the Journal title using the Library Catalogue. Also, the library catalogue will show if the library holds any paper copies of the journal.

In this case full text is available. Click on the link to go to the article in ScienceDirect.

If you wish to add the reference to the folder, click on the plus symbol next to the item.

Now click on the folder icon at the top to open the folder.

This is a temporary folder therefore if you wish to keep the references something must be done with them before leaving Summon.

If you want to, pick one of the citation format styles offered.

If you are using Endnote you can at this point “Export” the references you have saved to Endnote.

The other options are Print or Email.
