Adult Basic Education Student Assistance Program (ABESAP) Handout

The Adult Basic Education Student Assistance Program (ABESAP) is a provincial government -funded program designed to provide direct educational costs for students enrolled in developmental programs: Academic Upgrading (ABE), English Language Studies (ELST), and Access Programs for People with Disabilities (APPD).

ELIGIBILITY

Eligibility is based on assessed financial need, applicable course registration and available ABESAP funding through the Student Awards and Financial Assistance (SAFA) office at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. To be considered to have financial need, applicants must also meet or be below a gross income level which depends on family size, as set by the Ministry of Advanced Education.

A valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) is required. An applicant with a SIN beginning with 0 or 8 is not eligible for assistance through this program

An applicant with a SIN beginning with a 9 must submit proof of documentation of Protected Person status

If submitting a copy of a Permanent Resident card, it must be valid and the photocopy must be clear (both back and front copy of the card is required)

HOW DO I APPLY?

One ABESAP application is required for each academic term (fall/spring/summer) and must be submitted by theterm’sapplication deadline toStudent Awards and Financial Assistance

Print an ABESAP application form from (under “Find a Form”) or from the Student Awards and Financial Assistance website Also print out the Fee Deferral form and attach to your application. (Download ABESAP Fee Deferral).

Application forms are also available at the Student Awards and Financial Assistance office on any campus

Ensure you have paid your $40 admission fee

Fee Deferral: Upon receiving a signedABESAP application form,submitted by the term’s ABESAP application deadline to the Student Awards and Financial Assistance office, a Fee Deferral will be activated on the student’s account (Summer Fee Deferrals will expire on June 29, 2012). This will allow time for course registrations and processing of the ABESAP application. A Fee Deferral does not guarantee that ABESAP funding will be approved. If the ABESAP application is deemed incomplete or is denied, the Fee Deferral will be revoked. It is a student’s responsibility to check their student account regularly to ensure that all fees are paid up-to-date.

Ensure your Immigration Status and address on your ABESAP application matches the information on filewith the Registrar's Office.

Important Note: Student Awards and Financial Assistance will not process incomplete applications.

Once your ABESAP application is processed and a decision is made, Student Awards and Financial Assistancewill send a notification letter to the address on file with the Registrar's Office.
