Seattle - (National Pinoy Archives) – On the month’s eve of the 13th National Conference, some of the following FANHS members, supporters and honorees, having died in 2009 and 2010, areremembered during the Memorial Day vigils.

In Memoriam 2009

+ Deceimo (Dec) Andrade,76, first president (1993-98) of Salinas-Monterey County Chapter, later becoming Monterey Bay Chapter, died unexpectedly January 5, 2009. A resident of Carmel Valley, Calif., Dec was born December 11, 1932, in Aromas, Calif., and reared in SalinasValley. A HartnellCollege and Cal Poly graduate, he became a civil engineer. His pursuits in life were golf, tennis, cooking, statistics, coaching, plus Pinoy basketball, volleyball and golf tournaments. After he had raised his family in Fremont, Calif., he found his former high school sweetheart after a separation of 52 years. He and Orvella married in 2002 with Dec being welcomed to her family as their chief cook, bottle washer and best friend because of his unconditional love. Survivors besides his wife are five sons, Randy with Rose, Joseph, Jeff with Lisa, Rod with Kristin and Andrew; 12 grandchildren; and four more children “of the heart “ being Orvella’s, plus Dec’s in-laws.

+ Bernard Docusen, the boxing welterweight great FANHS had honored in the 10th National Conference at St. Louis in 2004, died January 11, 2009, at the age of 82 of Parkinson’s Disease after a ring record of 66 wins-12 losses-six ties. Born Joseph Bernard Docusen in New Orleans on June 19, 1927 (the birthdate of Dr. Jose Rizal) to Regino Elegado Docusen from Pangasinan and a French Creole mother, Big Duke grew up in boxing gyms and billiard halls to start boxing at 12 and turned pro at 15. He and brother, Maxie, had been prevented from fighting in some states because they had been registered as “colored.” Surviving family members interceded to claim them to be “half-

Caucasian and half-Filipino heritage.” Bernard emerged to be the main contender for the

welterweight crown, which he unsuccessfully fought in 1948 against the legendary Sugar Ray Robinson in Chicago. Bernard is survived by his wife, six children, 15 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchilden and one great-great-grandchild.

+ Vincent Avestruz Lawsin, 85, father of trustee Emily Lawsin, FANHS supporter and Filipino Community of Seattle past president, died March 9, 2010 of complications in Seattle. Also surviving are a two sons, a granddaughter and numerous relatives.

+ Charles Awit Farrell, 56, born March 14, 1952 in Makati,Rizal, Philippines; Metro Transit driver, Filipino Youth Activities, Inc,. icon; FANHS benefactor of its National Office and National Pinoy Archives; died February 8, 2009 in Seattle; survived by wife, Carmen Eligio Farrell, and two sons, Conrad and IanFarrell, allof Seattle.

+ Robert David Basconcillo, 51, son of 1992-96 San Francisco Chapter treasurer FredBasconcillo, died April 5, 2009, of cancer in South San Francisco.. He was also survived a brother and sister.

+ Jane Teresa (Terry) Alayu,83,born October 25, 1926, in Chicago;social worker, then recreation director, education specialist, education center director for the military in Guam, England, Germany and U.S., actress, 2000-2002 Midwest Chapter fifth president;died February 13, 2009 in Chicago; among survivors is sister, trustee Fran Alayu Womack, FANHS national treasurer from Chicago.

+ Eva Reyes Dangaran,70, born October 18, 1938 in Turlock, Calif.; American Baptist Women of the West past president, 1994-2006 Fresno Chapter treasurer;died March 19, 2009 in Fresno. Calif.; survived by son, Rev. Steven Dangaran, Salem, Ore., four grandchildren Ryan, Kelsey, Jonathan Dangaran and Cesilia Ann Lomeli, a large and extended families including the Pilar Family of Dangaran, Autentico, Bilar, Ventura, Cordova and Balucas.Preceding her was husband, Dr. Ronald Danagaran, 74, Fresno Chapter vice president, who died June 16, 2007, in Fresno.

+ Teresa Elizabeth Romero (Terri) Jamero, 74,born October 8, 1934in Stockton;community leader and activist;1982 FANHS charter member, 1984-85 cabinet member,1984-1988 National Treasurer, 1986-2001 trustee, 1988-1990 National Vice President, 1990-1994 Third National President; died April 2, 2009, in Modesto. Calif. Survivors include trustee emeritus Peter M. Jamero of Atwater, Calif., six children, Karen with Ronny Armada, Chery with Philip Organo, Peter with Caryn, Julie with Ted Hada,

+ Herbert Rillera,78, born in 1931 in San Francisco; 33-year Mare Island Naval Shipyard marine engineer, 1991-2009Vallejo Chapter treasurer; died July 14, 2009, in Napa, Calif.; survived by family.

+ Reynaldo Gamboa (Ronnie) Alejandro,67, born October 11, 1941 in Manila; author of some 70-plus books in cooking, dance and Philippinyana, librarian, choreographer, dancer, cultural worker;1986-2004 trustee, 1994-2006 Metropolitan New York Chapter founding president; died August 9, 2009, in Greenwich Village, New York City; survived by siblings, Nolando, Jack, Joselito, Milagros, Sandy David and Gerard; cremated remains scattered in Hudson River.

+ Josephine Saito Espineda Paular,77, born February 21, 1932 in Pescadores, Calif.; 33-year elementary and special education teacher, 1988-2001 FANHS Sacramento Delta Chapter secretary. Jo died in Sacramentoon August 31, 2009, the same date asthe 51st wedding anniversary with her surviving husband, trustee emeritus and Sacramento Delta past president Raymond Paular of Sacramento. Also surviving are two grown daughters, Lorena with Carlos Aguila and Leilani with Andrew Finley; four grandchildren, Jasmine, Carlos Jr. in the U.S. Army and Analisa Aguila and Kai Finley; two siblings, Elizabeth Espineda Ordiz, Delano,Calif., and Frank Panoncialman, Redondo Beach, Calif.

+ Dolores Gorre Efhan, member of Sacramento’s pioneering Gorre family and the Sacramento Delta Chapter.

+ Lewis P. Muca,79, of the California Central Coast Chapter died January 10; born January 26, 1930 in Pittsburgh, Calif.; 33 years as Pan American Airlines maintenance mechanic; survived by four children, Andrea and Glenn Adams, Kansas

Roberta and Ted Kemmet, Santa Maria, Calif., six grandchildren, Gabriel Villanueva, 0Darren and Brandon with Tiffany Logan, Mika, Max and Zachary Kemmet, and four siblings, Annie and Ben Mosqueda, Paulino Anadon, Connie Jamero and Rosita Gonzalez. He was preceded by first wife, Felipa, and second wife, Amparo who also was a chapter member and died in June 2008, the same time Marciana Inez Romero, another chapter member, had also died.

+ Suzanna Bacus Caballero (Sue) Mangrobang,83, died March 21, 2010; a cherished member of Stockton Chapter since 1993 and chapter’s

2003 Community Recognition Award honoree; dental assistant, nurse,

cosmetologist, housecleaner; survivors include brother, Rosalio (Sleepy) Caballero, himself a Stockton personality and a Stockton Chapter founding member.

+ Helen Agcaoili Cooper Wardof Burlingame, Calif.; FANHS national member; born 1915in the Philippinesand died March 30, 2010. A 1938 University of Kansas graduate in Romance languages, Burlingame Public Library retired circulation librarian, San Mateo Historical Association Funders Group member; joinede FANHS through Helen Brown and attended FANHS national conferences in New Orleans, Chicago, San Francisco, New York, Portland; widow of attorney Charles Ward and survived by 3 sons, brother and sister.

+ Richard Emile Bautista Urbiztondoof Las Vegas, Nev.; born January 19, 1961 and died March 30, 2010 in La Vegas; son of Adele Urbiztondo, 1992-96 San Francisco Chapter president, who had moved to Vegas years ago to be with her son. Richard aworld traveler and gifts operator; survived also by 4 brothers,Steve, Dave, Dennis and Sid,sister, Susie, and large family; memorial reception in San Francisco.

+ Victoria Taylor Manalo Draves, 85, the Olympic diving queen FANHS had honored in the 9th National Conference at Los Angeles in 2002, died of heart and cancer complications April, 11, 2010, in Palm Springs, Calif. The 1948 Olympic champion is survived by her coach-husband of 55 years, Lyle, their sons, themselves Acapulco and World Champion high divers, David, Jeffery, Dale and Kim, six grandchildren, and a twin sister, Consuelo (Connie). Vickie was born December 31, 1924 in San Francisco to Teofilo Manalo from Orani, Bataan, Philippines, and Gertrude Taylor from London, England. With two gold medals in springboard and platform diving, Vickie became the first American woman to accomplish such feat. More so, she was the first woman of Asian Pacific American ethnicity even to win a gold medal. Coming from a poor family, she began competing at age 17 but throughout her training Vickie faced discrimination about her Filipino heritage. Even clubs had requested she

for a double entree). She met Lyle, who coached her for the Olympic trials in the mid-1940s. The two married on July 12, 1946. After the Olympics(even racist Filipinos started to claim Vickie as a cousin), the Draveses toured around the world to appear in water performances, including the Water Follies in Seattle. Her accolades include induction into the International Swimming Hall of Fame and in 2006 having a two-acre San Francisco park named the VictoriaManaloDravesPark

+ Concepcion Paloma Moreno Bohulano, 88, maternal grandmother of trustee Prof. Dawn Bohulano Mabalon, died May 21, 2010 in Stockton where she had devoted much of her life in community service. Born December 6, 1921, in CebuCity, she was a World War II bride to the late Delfin P. Bohulano Sr., a U.S. Army veteran of the First Filipino Infantry Regiment, helping liberate the Philippines. They had met in her hometown of Palompon, Leyte. Degreed in education, she taught high school before the couple with their two oldest children immigrated to the U.S., first in Vallejo, then Tracy and in 1953 to Stockton. Concepcion worked in canneries, as an agricultural camp cook and in the “campo” fields with her husband, a farm labor contractor. She became one of the earliest Filipino American public school teachers in the U.S.and taught elementary school from 1962 to 1975 in the TracyUnifiedSchool District. Concepcion was active in fraternal,veterans, cultural, civic and Catholic organizations. She was Filipino Community of Stockton vice president and American Legion Auxiliary District 11 president. She was a staunch supporter of the Little Manila Foundation. The FANHS Stockton Chapter presented her with a Community Recognition Award. Other survivors include son, Delfin Jr. with Wendy, three daughters, Christine Bloch with Jim, Virginia and Adeline Suguitan with Mel; 7 grandchildren, Dawn with Jesus Gonzales, Jared Bohulano, Arianne Suguitan, Mel Tito Suguitan II, Tamara Suguitan, Darlene Mabalon Kelley with Clemente and Anna Gamboa with Gabriel; and 3 great-grandchilren besides various relatives in the U.S. and the Philippines.
