Sarah Hawkins sent the following on 28th January 2008 to Jim Male. 3 separate passages.
Sarah MALE b. abt 1797 is the mother of Thomas Hallett or Male born abt 1821; John Hallett or Male c. 5.5.1822, and Lavinia Hallett or Male c. 31.7.1825. The father was John Hallett and a black sheep of a wealthy family. The Hallett’s believed that John intended to marry Sarah Male but got deported. He was a thief and an alcoholic.
(1)..Court Record 1822.. John Hallett the younger accused of stealing privately in the stable of Job Bradford and William Bradford at Kingsbury Episcopi on 30th November last, one saddle and 40 shillings of goods – their property. Found guilty and sentenced to 18 months hard labour.
(2).. An alcoholic and this probably what caused him to steal firstly from the Bradford cousins, and finally from a farmer in Muchelney and that with “ with force and arms”. This latter theft was of 200 lbs of cheese and 4 gallons of elder wine and got him a death sentence which was reprieved to 14 years transportation to New South Wales
At first I thought that the reprieve was obtained through the influence of his father or his uncle Thomas, both who held parish positions. On reading “ FatalShore” by Robert Hughes, it seems that death sentences were seldom carried out and transportation was normal.
(3) “And I give in bequeath unto my nephew John Hallett who is now in New South Wales the sum of ten pounds
and if he shall die before making a on my Executors for the said ten pounds I give and bequeath the said ten
pounds unto the three children of Male of Bladon in the said parish of Kingsbury Episcopi which are Thomas
Hallett, John Hallett and Lavenia Hallett equally between and share alike” in Aug 1825.
