2013-14

•An Inter-collegiate Workshop on Advanced Linguistics titled “Lingua e linguistic” was held on July 22, 2013. Mr. Chadrachoodan a renowned research scholar served as the resource person. It was attended by students and professors from the colleges in the city.

•The Department (in association with Tourism Club and Environment Protection Club, Aluva,) organized a UGC sponsored National Seminar on the topic ‘Literature and Environment Deep Ecological Perspectives’ from July 10-13, 2013. The seminar was inaugurated by V S Vijayan, renowned environmentalist.

•FESTA Annual Meet- 2013

The annual meet of Former English Students and Teachers Association (FESTA) was held on 10th August 2013 at Mother Theresa Seminar Hall. 35 alumni took part in the meet and shared their memories. Three students from the first batch and four students from the second batch of B.A English Literature were present. NajmaNazeer was elected as the secretary of FESTA. It was decided to open a bank account for the Association. The gathering discussed about the possibilities of contributions by the members of FESTA to the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the College.

•As part of the Additional Skill Acquisition Programme (ASAP), 6 teachers of the dept – Ms. Lincy Joseph, Ms. Bindu Varghese, Ms. Jasmine, Ms. Saumi, Ms. Preethy and Ms. Sreeja - attended training at Trivandrum from April 7th -10th, 2013.

A 21 days training was given to 60 students from various colleges from May 7th -27th. Most students were selected as SDEs and the department won a Four Star rating for the college.

•A seminar was conducted for the final year Communicative English students on Editor’s role and duties in Indian Scenario by K A Shaji, Senior Correspondent of ‘The Hindu’ on November 26, 2013.

•Visit to Anganwadi -As part of Children's Day celebrations, students and faculty, visited the Aluva Day Care (Anganwadi) on November 13th. Ms.Saumi, Ms.Jasmine, Ms.Seema and Ms.Chitralekha lead a group of 25 students. They organized entertainment programmes, distributed sweets, as well as placards promoting education.

•Swayam Thozhil -The Departments of English, Zoology and Commerce along with the Lions Club organized a free of cost self employment training program for women on the 24th of Oct. 2013. The function was presided over by Dr. Hyderali, Chairman, Pain and Palliative Care Center, Anwar Hospital.

More than 200 women were trained in umbrella making, soap making, jewelry making, saree printing, vegetable carving etc.

•Journalist M P Basheer of India Vision was invited to the department for a session on Photojournalism on 6th December 2013. The discussion that followed the session was highly productive for our aspiring young journalists.

•The final year Communicative English students conducted an inter-collegiate fest as part of their curriculum. The 2 day event Espirito2014, was inaugurated by the famous cine artist DhyanSreenivasan. 15 colleges competed in 7 events and Bharat Mata College,Thrikkakara won the over- all trophy. Pole dance, rope dance, juggling, Bollywood dances etc .by Tandav Dance School and a performance by Percussionist Sonu Sebastian were the highlights of the Fest.

•English Association was inaugurated by popular Indian English Writer Miss. Shiney Antony on the 10th of January 2014. She spoke on the subject Contemporary Indian Writing in English.

•Library Week: the library and the English department together celebrated the library week from 13 Jan to 17 Jan 2014. It included competitions like Quiz, loud reading, Tableau, Spelling Bee, Power point presentation on historically significant places in Kerala. The function was inaugurated by renowned writer and translator Priya A S who spoke on the importance of mother tongue in language learning.

•Ancy Antony of II BA English received an honourable mention in the All India Essay Writing Event 2013 organized by Shri Ram Chandra Mission & United Nations Information Centre for India & Bhutan certificate awarded on 26 Jan 2014.

•Academic Week on 30th January 2014, consisted of various competitions like- debate, poster designing.

  • ASAP Inaugural ceremony

•The teachers also gave classes in basic grammar, spoken English and personality development in a project Reform for young boys and girls of Veropoly and Kottapuram diocese with a view to create excellence in these students who belong to the socially and educationally backward class. The classes were conducted on 2nd Saturdays 9.30 to 12.30 from July to February for VIII standard boys and girls held with an objective of creating confidence and a clear outlook on focused aptitude based career oriented study.

•Press Visit: The II Communicative English students visited the office of the national newspaper The Hindu, with Ms. Mariya and Ms. Sreeja on Feb 13, 2014.

•Media Visit-A visit was arrangedfor the final year Communicative English students to news channel as part of their syllabus. The visit has helped them to get a real time experience of a working news channel and its functioning.

•Shahida of III Communicative English won 3rd prize in All Kerala Elocution Competition and was part of the team that won a National Level Inter-collegiate Crossfire Debate Competition.

•Extension Activity – On 26.02.2014, faculty and students visited Aluva Govt Hospital ,Special Ward and TB ward and distributed stationary/toiletry kit as well as food materials to the inmates.
