February 2014 BRILLIANT Staff award nominations: TOP TEAM

Nominee: Catering Team

Nominated by: Peter Allen, facilities manager

Reason for nomination:I would like to nominate the Catering Team for their hard work all year round but particularly for their work over the festive period. They provided patients with good quality Christmas dinners and festive meals on Christmas day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. They also provided staff with Christmas celebration meals in the restaurant. They work hard the rest of the year by providing food and drinks to all departments, this can involve delivering to venues that are outside or that doesn’t have easy access but they still deliver in all weather.

Nominee: Anti-coagulation Team

Nominated by: Angela Allsop, Medical Secretary (also a patient)

Reasons for nomination: I would like to nominate the anti-coagulation team here at the hospital for a Brilliant Award. They have been looking after me now for a number of years - though I've not been an 'easy' patient to deal with they have given me fantastic care with care and patience above and beyond what would be expected - they've pulled me through a few sticky moments and I will be for ever grateful to them all (one in particular who has seen me through a few times when I've wanted to stop the treatment etc and that’s Jason Hobson)

Nominee: Supervisors of Midwives (SOM’s) Team

Nominated by: Sue Gibson, Head of Midwifery

Reason for nomination:I am trying again with this team as they aren’t recognised and the work they undertake is phenomenal in regards to patient safety and quality of maternity services.

Supervisors of Midwives (SOM'S)are midwives who have chosen to undergo 6 further months of training, following peer selection from their colleagues. The role of a SOMis written in statute and forms a vital part of the professional regulation and framework covering the quality of midwifery practice in any organisation. The number one priority is quality and safety for mothers and babies, closely followed by support for midwives in maintaining standards and in encouraging continual professional development for individuals and the maternity service.

The SOMS at Barnsley consistently but quietly undertake their additional duties with commitment, passion, loyalty and diligence. Regionally they are acknowledged as an exemplary team by the Local Supervising Authority Midwifery Officer; this was once again acknowledged in December 2013 via the formal audit visit which also informs the NMC of the quality of midwifery at Barnsley.

Nominee: ICT Help Desk staff

Nominated by: Mike Lees, Head of Resilience & Security

Reason for nomination:The Trust electronic access control system is in place to ensure that our patients and staff are kept safe 24/7. This is a highly complex system that has been substantially upgraded over the past 8 months. The upgrade entailed very laborious work of manually transferring 3,100 records and photographs from the old database. We were unable to do this transfer electronically and for Lisa and myself it would have taken literally months. I was merely discussing this with the two ICT Help Desk staff who volunteered to do this on our behalf and I didn't even have to ask. Ian Fridd their manager kindly agreed for them to complete the task and they have completed the entire transfer in 6 weeks between their existing busy workload. This has been a fabulous example of cross departmental teamwork and definitely going that extra mile. Although not front line patient care, this has ensured we have continued to provide an essential safe environment for patients and staff.

February 2014 BRILLIANT Staff award nomination: TOP INDIVIDUAL
