NB. Some time after 3rd September, 1783, a tax was imposed by the British Government on all entries
in Parish Registers, in the United Kingdom and Ireland. I do not know the exact date, but in
Bromfield Parish in Cumberland the Curate made the following entry:
“NB. I, John Waite, Curate of Bromfield, have this 2nd day of October, 1783, taken out a Licence
for Registering all Burials, Marriages, Births & Christening within the Parish of Bromfield, and
accordingly have received a Duty of Threepence as charged upon each, according to Act of
Parliament”
Note: - After August 30th 1783 – NB. Duty of Threepence was received after this date for all Christenings according to Act of Parliament.
The Act was repealed in 1794, but during that period of 10/11 years, only four baptisms were recorded in Kinawley Parish, no burials were recorded, and probably about half the number of marriages.
The Parishioners obviously refused to pay the tax.
