Lieutenant Commander Arthur Mallorie Coleman, OBE, DSC
Arthur Coleman joined the Royal Navy on DTBR. He was promoted to Midshipman on DTBR and to Sub Lieutenant on DTBR. He was awarded a Mention in Despatches – see London Gazette dated 20th Apr 1917 ‘for good services in the Patrol Cruisers’. Promotion to Lieutenant followed on 1st May 1917. On 1st Jul 1917 (Nominal List) he was appointed to HMS MAIDSTONE (9th Submarine Flotilla) at Harwich ‘for Submarines’ and then to HMS DOLPHIN ‘for Submarines’ on 1st Sep 1917 (Nominal List). On 1st Oct 1917 (Nominal List) he was appointed to HMS DOLPHIN ‘for Submarine Training’. His first Submarine appointment followed on 1st Feb 1918 (Nominal List) when he was appointed to HMS DOLPHIN ‘for Submarine C13 as First Lieutenant’. Submarine C13 was transferred to the Submarine Depot Ship HMS TITANIA (11th Submarine Flotilla) at Blyth on 1st Mar 1918 (Nominal List). His next appointment was to the Submarine Depot Ship HMS BONAVENTURE at Gibraltar ‘for Submarine E35 as First Lieutenant’ on 9th May 1918. Submarine E35 (Lieutenant Guy D’Oyly Hughes) sank the German U-Boat U-154 (Gercke) west of Gibraltar (off Cape St. Vincent) on 11th May 1918. For his part in the attack Arthur Coleman was awarded the DSC – see London Gazette dated 13th Sep 1918. On 3rd Apr 1919 Arthur Coleman was appointed to HMS DOLPHIN ‘for Submarines’. He was still serving in HMS DOLPHIN in January 1920. His next appointments have not yet been established.
He was promoted to Lieutenant Commander on 1st May 1925 and, in the July 1931 Navy List he is noted as having been transferred to the Retired List. At that time he was serving as ‘Harbour Master in the Port of London Authority’. In the Annual Report (1934/35) of the Submarine Old Comrades Association 1902 – 1918 (London) he was listed as a member of the Association. He was still serving in that appointment in January 1935 but had left that appointment by January 1937. Arthur Coleman was recalled for further service during WWII and was promoted to Acting Commander on the Retired List on DTBR. He was appointed OBE – see London Gazette dated 27th Jun 1941. He reverted to the Retired List post War and he was still included in the Navy List of Retired Officers in 1957. No further information is currently available.
Lieutenant Commander Denis Walter Harrison Last
Denis Last was born on 28th Oct 1897 joined the Royal Navy as a Cadet in Sep 1910. He was promoted to Midshipman on 1st Sep 1914 and, in August 1914 he was appointed to the Light Cruiser HMS ISIS (Captain James T Bush, Royal Navy). In December 1914 he was not listed in any appointment. He was promoted to Acting Sub Lieutenant on 15th Sep 1916 and to Sub Lieutenant on 15th Mar 1917. His other WWI Ships have not yet been established but he was appointed to HMS DOLPHIN ‘for Submarine Training’ on 5th Nov 1917 (Nominal List) and, on completion of training he was appointed to the Submarine Depot Ship HMS LUCIA (10th Submarine Flotilla) at South Bank, Middlesborough ‘for Submarines’ to date 23rd Jan 1918 (1st Feb 1918 Nominal List) and he was promoted to Acting Lieutenant on 15th May 1918. On 1st Apr 1918 (28th Mar 1918 Nominal List) he was appointed to the Submarine Flotilla Leader HMS FEARLESS (12th Submarine Flotilla) at Rosyth ‘for Submarine K8 as Third Hand’. Promotion to Lieutenant followed on 15th Sep 1918. He was still serving in Submarine K8 in December 1918.
In January 1919 Denis Last was appointed to HMS PRESIDENT ‘for Courses at Cambridge University’ – two terms - and was then sent to HMS DRYAD (the Navigation School) at Portsmouth ‘for the (N) Course’ on 6th Sep 1919. On 4th Jan 1920 he was appointed to HMS DOLPHIN ‘for Submarine C20 as First Lieutenant’ but, the following day he was appointed to HMS LUCIA ‘for Submarine L33’. He was sent to the Far East on 17th Aug 1920 with an appointment to the Submarine Depot Ship HMS TITANIA (4th Submarine Flotilla) at Hong Kong ‘for Submarines’. He returned home in May 1922 with an appointment to HMS DOLPHIN ‘for Submarine L24 as First Lieutenant’ on 9th Jul 1922. He was transferred to the Retired List at his own request on 8th Aug 1922. In the Annual Report (1934/35) of the Submarine Old Comrades Association 1902 – 1918 (London) he was listed as a member of the Association. He resigned from the Retired List on 1st Jul 1934 having become a ‘Pacifist’. No further information is currently available.
Lieutenant Commander Reginald Henry Everest Plummer
Reginald Plummer was promoted to Temporary Engineer Lieutenant on 28th Sep 1916. In December 1918 he was serving in the Submarine Depot Ship HMS VULCAN ‘and for Duty with Submarines’ to which he had been appointed on 19th Apr 1917. He had been demobilised by January 1920. In the Annual Report (1934/35) of the Submarine Old Comrades Association 1902 – 1918 (London) he was listed as a member of the Association. No further information is currently available.
