Information Notes

1.The Wah Yan Post Secondary Education Trust Fund is offering a maximum of TWO scholarship awards and a number of grants named the `Father Barrett Memorial Scholarships / Grant' to award and to finance outstanding students from WAH YAN COLLEGE HONG KONG and WAH YAN COLLEGE KOWLOON for further studies in H.K. or overseas in the 2010-11 academic year.

2.Successful candidates will be those with excellent scholastic achievements and strong leadership abilities demonstrated in their extra-curricular activities. They are expected to have a strong sense of commitment to Hong Kong and to Wah Yan and should be ready to contribute to the local community upon the completion of their academic programs. For candidates applying for grants, their financial needs may also be considered.

3.Students eligible to apply are those from Wah Yan College, Hong Kong or Kowloon who will commence undergraduate studies in any tertiary institution in Hong Kong or overseas in the 2010-2011 academic year and who meet the criteria set out below. Application for a study program leading to a second degree or a study program being currently pursued WILL NOT be considered.

4.Further details of the scholarships /grants are as follows:

Name of Award: “Wah Yan Post Secondary Education Trust Fund - Fr. Barrett Memorial Scholarship / Grant for Undergraduate Studies”. The scholarship recipient will be called “Wah Yan Scholar (in commemoration of Fr. Barrett)”

Duration of Award:The scholarship award will be a fixed, one-off payment while the grant will be generally for 3 years depending on the length of the proposed course of study and renewable annually in the light of academic progress and other performance deemed satisfactory by the Trustees. We may consider extending the award of grants to cover the following: (i) the exchange programme for local students to go abroad for a year as part of their education programme; (ii) double degrees, provided that the study programme leading to such degrees is pursued concurrently.

Value of Award:The SCHOLARSHIP AWARD, in the maximum of two a year, will be a fixed, one-off payment of HK$100,000 each. The financial circumstances of the applicant WOULD NOT be taken into account in making the award. The successful candidate would also receive the Patrick Yu Book Prize of HK$5,000.00. His name would be placed on the plaque of Wah Yan Scholars in Wah Yan College, Hong Kong. If there are no suitable candidates, awards will not be offered this year.

The upper limit of the GRANT will be $200,000 a year for studies abroad and $80,000 a year for studies locally. A scholarship applicant in need of financial assistance may ALSO apply for a grant in addition to applying for a scholarship award. There will be no limit to the number of grants, depending on the decisions of the Board of Trustees.

Conditions of Award:Successful candidates for the scholarships / grants will be required to comply with the conditions of awards should they decide to accept any award made under this scheme. In particular, these candidates must return to work in Hong Kong or other areas in China, or obtain employment with an entity or organization in Hong Kong, for a minimum of 36 consecutive months immediately on completion of their study programme.

Permission for a delayed return to Hong Kong to fulfill the employment condition or for waiver of such employment condition may be sought from the Board of Trustees, who will consider the merits of the candidate’s case. If the candidate fails to get such permission or to comply with the employment condition, he will be required to repay such sum, not exceeding the total value of the award so received, and upon such terms as the Board of Trustees deem.

Eligibility:Applicants for the scholarship or grant must fulfill the following criteria:-

(i) They must be permanent residents of Hong Kong.

(ii)They will have, at the end of July 2009, received at least 3 years of continuous education in Wah Yan College, Hong Kong or Wah Yan College Kowloon.

(iii)They should have a minimum of 5 distinctions in the HKCEE and Level 5 or above in English and Chinese (a minimum of 18 points in the best 6 subjects in the HKCEE and Level 4 or above in English and Chinese for application for grants).

Applicants should have strong leadership abilities demonstrated in their extra-curricular activities. They should also show a good record of service to the school and / or the community.

(iv) They should fulfill all application procedures and admission requirements at the institution of their choice and be offered a place subsequently.

(v) Applicants are allowed to apply only once, whether it be in Form 6 or Form 7. They are only allowed to apply for a second time under very special circumstances, such as when the applicant has to take the HKCEE again, or there are drastic changes in his family, or where he has gained acceptance to a new university.

In addition, application forms will be handed out to the current F.6 and F.7 students of both Wah Yan Colleges on 26th February 2008. All applications should reach the Principal of Wah Yan College, Hong Kong at the above address on or before 16th April 2010. Late applications WOULD NOT be considered.

Selection Procedure:Suitable applicants will be invited to attend the selection interview scheduled in May 2010. Any applicant who has not received an invitation to attend an interview by 1st May 2010 may assume that the application has been unsuccessful. The decisions of the Trustees are final. In no circumstances will the Trustees be required to explain why any application has not been successful.

vii.A copy of acceptance letter of university (if available)

viii.A copy of prospectus and student handbook of university relating to the course to be taken, tuition fees and other expenses. (if available).

ix.Copies of tax returns of family members, employer's letters, and other documents relevant to the income and assets of the family.

x.One recent passport-size photograph which should be affixed securely to this form in the space provided.
