Instructions: As part of our Family & Parenting Unit, you have created a Chia Child. You will now have to serve as its surrogate parent for 30 days. You will have to demonstrate how well you have met thebasic needs(see below) of your Chia Child over the course of these 30 days. Use this packet to help you compare the development of your Chia Child to that of a human child. In no way is this project meant to prepare you for parenthood. Being a parent is a lifetime commitment involving love, dedication, and sacrifice.

- How often did I need to be fed when I was first born (newborn)?
- What types of things did I eat during my first 6 months (infant)?
- How many hours out of your normal day did you have to spend feeding and taking care of me during my first few years of life?
B. Think about some of the things you learned in class, and while talking to your parents & family. Answer the following questions in complete sentences. Please be sure they are thoughtful responses with as much details as possible.
- Compare the physical needs of the plant to your physical needs when you were first born. What are the similarities, differences, etc?
- Describe the amount of time and effort that was required to take care of your plant each day?
- Compare the amount of time & effort it took you to care for your plant each day to the amount of time it takes to care for a baby. Include comments about the quality of care a baby needs compared to a plant. Discuss the cognitive & emotional needs,the patience involved in childcare, the lifetime commitment, etc.
- What changes would you have to make to have enough time to provide quality care for a baby? How would you support the baby financially? Do you think you would be ready to make those changes/sacrifices as a teenager, or do you think you would need to be older before having children? Why?
- Do you think parenting becomes easier or more difficult as the kids get older? Compare the challenges parents have with young children to the challenges when they become adolescents.
