As a charity, Groundwork West Midlands works alongside local communities, public bodies, private companies and other voluntary sector organisations to support local communities. We create real change. That means carrying out work locally, regionally and nationally that:

• Builds people's skills and improves job prospects

• Redesigns our neglected open spaces for twenty-first century use

• Supports people to life healthier lifestyles using proven behaviour change approaches

• Motivates and develops our young people

We have delivered programmes in collaboration with a variety of stakeholders including local authority (Coventry City Council, Public Health Coventry), third sector (CAB Coventry, Valley House) and housing partners (Midland Heart, Whitefriars).

The success of our engagement is based on strong local knowledge of communities, specifically: needs and issues, priorities, local infrastructure and community venues. We are skilled at identifying and addressing barriers to access (language, geographical, financial). Our delivery in Coventry has been particularly successful in accessing BME community members (including non-English speakers) through trusted intermediaries and in tailoring to specific group interests.

Our work across the region includes the delivery of healthy eating and physical activity programmes, as well as family weight management interventions, delivery of health assessments and working with people on a 1:1 basis to achieve positive health outcomes.

Outline of organisation (organisation vision, services etc)

Being connected, having friends and people you can count on are the things that help most people be happy and able to manage life’s changes. But these things don’t usually feature in statutory responses to crisis or need.

For the last 10 years Grapevine has helped children, young people and adults have better lives that are more connected to others. We support them to build a network of people who can help them to develop strengths and skills to cope with life’s ups and downs when we can’t be there. We build on each person’s individual abilities and the positive things in their community to help them stand on their feet, make a contribution and get a better life. We also offer advocacy, information and guidance so that they get the best out of the statutory support available to them e.g. Personal Budgets.

On a daily basis we provide: Independent Support to young disabled people transferring from Statements to new Education Health and Care Plans (146 last year), information and advocacy to adults (154), youth activity (54), adult empowerment services e.g. getting involved in checking and co-designing services (370), community inclusion e.g. support and information (91). We also mobilise sustainable community-led activity e.g. our campaign to get local disabled people more physically active (777 people).

I can see the merit of preventative work, reducing the need for medical services at an early stage in someone’s life, this can be done in many ways, I can also understand the need for communities to have provision for people when they come out of hospital so again it reduce the risk of returning into the main stream service of medicine. I believe that communities/community groups with the right support can work alongside GPs in improving people’s welfare and particularly mental health, I would like the opportunity to explore this with others.
