Obituary

“To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under the heaven….”

A Time to Be Born: February 12, 1923 was a joyous blessed day when Mary Agnes Stokes-Hicks was born to the family of Roosevelt and Onnie Stokes. Mary was the second child and the only daughter of Roosevelt and Onnie

A Time to Grow: Mary attended school in Nottoway County. In 1942, Mary married William Hicks and to their union two children was born.

A Time to Serve:Mary accepted Christ as her savior early in life and was baptized and joined the Union Baptist Church.

A Time to Work: Mary was proudly employed as a cook at the YMCA in Crewe for some years. Her last job was at the Piedmont Geriatric Hospital, she worked in the Housekeeping Department for 30 years, “Mary” was a gentle and kind person she enjoyed being around people.

A Time to Die: On September 13, 2007, The Master looked down on Mary and saw that the road was getting rough and that the hills were getting harder for her to climb. He gently closed her weary eyes and whispered, “Peace Be Thine” her soul now rests with God, and the earth will soon claim its own. But someday we’ll meet again - shouting around The Master’s Throne. Preceded her in death was her husband: William Hicks; mother: Onnie; father: Roosevelt and two brothers: John Lewis and Royal Stokes.

A Time to Remember:Mary Agnes Stokes-Hick leaves her legacy of love and devotions to her children: William Hicks (Carrie) of Silver Spring, Maryland and Mildred Evans (Michael) of Farmville, Virginia; three grandchildren: Nathan Hicks, Edris Goings and Alex Mahan; five great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; three brother-in-laws and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mildred Rather the sister she never had, Mildred was her sister, she loved Mildred and Mildred loved her.

Love Lives On

Those we love are never really lost to us---

We feel them in so many special ways---

Through friends they always cared about

And dreams they left behind,

In beauty that they added to our days…

In words of wisdom we still carry with us

And memories that never will be gone…

Those we love

Are never really lost to us---

For everywhere their special love lives on.

Her Journey’s Just Begun

Don’t think of her as gone away

Her journey’s just begun,

Life holds so many facets

This earth is only one.

Just think of her as resting

From the sorrows and the tears

In a place of warmth and comfort

Where there are no days and years.

Think how much she must be wishing.

That we could know today

How nothing but our sadness

Can really pass away.

And think of her as living

In hearts of those she touched

For nothing loved is ever lost

And she was loved so much.
