Fall 2018 Freshman Nursing Guarantee Program Supplemental Application

Attention: Applicants wishing to complete a Bachelors of Nursing (BSN) degreeonthe U of M Twin Cities campus can do so only through their admission to the Freshman Nursing Guarantee Program (FNGP). Given demand for this program, admission is highly competitive. To be considered, students must submit both their complete application for freshman admissions, scholarships, and the University Honors Program by November 1, 2017 and also the FNGP supplemental application by that same deadline.

Special note: Students not selected for admission the Freshman Nursing Guarantee Program will have the option of preparing for post-undergraduate study in nursing on the Twin Cities campus through the Masters in Nursing degree program after they’ve completed their four-year degree.

Deadline & Decision Notification Timeline

To be considered for admission to the University’s Freshman Nursing Guarantee Program, you must submit your complete admission application (including application fee, test score, and high school transcript) and this supplemental application in time for the November 1stfirstapplication deadline. Students who are complete by November 1st will receive an admission decision by January 31, 2018.

About the Freshman Nursing Guarantee ProgramStudents begin their studies in the College of Liberal Arts while receiving guidance and mentoring from the School of Nursing. Students are expected to meet grade and course expectations of their year and are then guaranteed admission to the School of Nursing to complete their remaining three years.

Why does the University of Minnesota offer a Freshman Nursing Guarantee Program?Our unique Freshman Nursing Guarantee program demonstrates the University's continued commitment as a leader in nursing education. This program ensures that students are prepared to begin their nursing studies their second year of University study. Due to lab space needs and competitiveness of clinical placements, admission to the Freshman Nursing Guarantee Program is very highly selective.

Participants work directly with faculty and advisorsin the School of Nursing during their freshman year. Close interaction with our faculty and advisorsduring this important first year of University study facilitates students' successful transition into the nursing program beginning theirsecondyear.

How competitive is admission to the Freshman Nursing Guarantee Program?

Interest in the field of nursing has been growing in rapidly in recent years. Due to space limitations with key resources such as laboratory space and clinical experiences, the School of Nursing has a strict enrollment limit. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program has limited space and therefore only a limited number of students can be admitted into our Freshman Nursing Guarantee Program.Students who enroll at the U of M and are not admitted to the FNGP can pursue a major in a related field before pursuinga Master of Nursing degree. Students may also wish to pursue a related academic interest or another health sciences program.

What if I want to study nursing at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, but I am not selected for the Freshman Nursing Guarantee Program as a freshman?Enrollment to the University's School of Nursing is primarily through the Freshman Nursing Guarantee. Students not selected for the Freshman Nursing Guarantee Program can pursue another area of undergraduate study as preparation for a master of nursing (M.N.). Students would apply to the Master of Nursing program (M.N.) to pursue their master’s degree in nursing following completion of their four year bachelor’s degree. The M.N. provides students with another pathway to a nursing degree and a career in nursing.

For fall 2017, the Freshman Nursing Guarantee Program had 115spaces for enrolled students. For those spaces, 882students applied and 431(48.9 percent) were admitted. The competitiveness of admission each year is based on the number of applications received and the academic qualifications of the applicants. The strongest applicants are selected for the Program. The middle 50 percent of fall 2017 freshman applicants selected for the Freshman Nursing Guarantee Program had a high school class rank in the 86thto97thpercentiles and ACT scores of 27 to 30. Successful applicants typically had ‘A’ grades in their college preparatory coursework, extensive leadership, and school and community engagement. What happens to students who are not selected for admission to the Freshman Nursing Guarantee Program?

The Freshman Nursing Guarantee Program is the primary point of admission for students seeking a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree on the Twin Cities campus. For students not entering the nursing program as freshmen, the University will maintain a small transfer student cohort whose course instruction will occur at our University of Minnesota Twin Cities School of Nursing satellite location in Rochester, Minnesota. Transfer admission to this cohort is very competitive, with just 32 enrollment spaces available due to laboratory and clinical limitations.
