Evidently some freshmen were upset by comments I made in last week’s paper. I thank the writer for taking the time to read the paper and respond to what she felt was an injustice to the Class of 2011.

However, since there was no name on the letter that was received by the Tornado Times Staff, it will not be printed, but I would like to respond to some of the issues that were addressed in the letter.

First of all, students need to read the Registration materials and be aware of their graduation requirements. Only 28 units are required to graduate! Yes, there are specific classes which are required, but the Class of 2011 does not have to have any more units than any class before them.

Secondly, yes, the Class of 2011 labors under the “Power of ‘I’ ”, a program that is intended to make them more successful in the long run by placing the responsibility of completing assignments and doing them well back on the student’s shoulders. If students learn to do all assignments to the best of their ability, they will have an easier time of earning the 28 units needed to graduate.

The last point I will make is one the writer made for me. Her last statement was, “We have our own EOC’s to pass.” That was my point exactly. The freshmen have an Algebra I EOC and an English I EOC they have to pass to graduate. Next year they will have a Civics EOC, Biology EOC and a Writing test. The Juniors and Seniors have already done what they need to do in these classes and have earned a few rights. Freshmen should have to earn the right to play like everyone else has!

Coach Kemp’s thoughts about the first game were, “It is just the first match but I like what I see. Boys’ tennis is always difficult because practices and games can be cancelled because of weather. In case there are those readers who have not noticed the new “lettering” around campus, “GT” is referring to the fact that the hallways formerly known as “G” are now a part of “A”. For example Mrs. Floyd’s room is no longer 211, but is now A-8. “A” hallway now goes all the way to Mr. Wynn’s room.
