Freshmen of the Week

Briyonka Bethea is the 14-year-old daughter of Bridgett and Dwayne Bethea. She was shocked to find out she was selected because she has never been anything like this before. Briyonka doesn’t participate in any extra-curricular activities. Briyonka plans on going to college to be a pediatrician.

Deanna Evans is the 14-year-old daughter of Maurice McDonald and Michelle Evans. Deanna is on the J.V. Girls Basketball team, a member of the Afro-American Club and in the youth choir, usher board, and praise dance ministry at Antioch Baptist Church. She was surprised and very happy with being nominated. Her favorite class this semester is World History Honors with Mr. Studer, because his class is fun. She has really been learning a lot. After high school Deanna plans to get a four-year college degree, but she isn’t sure what she will major in.

Outstanding Seniors

Brittany Paige Hunt is the 17 year old daughter of Mickey and Clementine Hunt. She plays volleyball and soccer, and participates in FBLA, Interact Club, NASA, and AISES. She likes to design, scrapbook, and participate in pageants. After high school, she plans on attending the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and major in nursing and minor in design. Her dream is to become a midwife after college.

Kayla Lee is the 17 year old daughter of Katrina Tatum and Willie Lee. She participates in the Interact Club, plays tennis and soccer, and runs track. She likes to sing, play sports, watch TV, hang out with her friends, talk on the phone, and write poetry. After high school, she plans to enlist in the navy and then go to law school. She plans to minor in psychology and stay in the service for about 20 years.

Congratulations to the following Tennis players for being named to the Southeastern Conference All-Conference Tennis Team: Rachel Williams, Kasey Leggett, Traci Parnell, and Beverly Vause.

Beverly Vause was named Player of the Year in Tennis. She has worked extremely hard, and deserves this honor. She said, “I felt like anyone could have gotten this award and I was lucky to get it, especially with all the hard work I put into tennis.”

Beverly is the 16 year-old daughter of Ricky and Linda Vause. Her hobbies include talking, fishing, riding 4-wheelers and most importantly, tennis. She is also a member of FFA. Her future plans are to go to college and have fun.

In addition, Coach Kemp was named Coach of the Year. This is Coach Kemp’s 3rd time receiving this honor. He says, “Every year I tell everyone that the kids deserve these awards not the coaches. The kids put out so much effort, and for the past few years have made the coach look good. I am honored and hopefully we can win many more.

Also, congratulations to the following Volleyball players for being selected to the Southeastern Conference All-Conference Volleyball Team: Brittany Hunt, Stephanie Powell, Sharonica Winningham. Honorable mention goes to Shiniah Powell, Amber Hunt, and Leanna Hunt.

Sharonica Winningham was named Conference Player of the Year. When asked how she felt when she discovered she was player of the year she said that she was shocked, but she knew that she couldn’t have done it without Coach Bake.

On top of all the other award and honors Coach Baker has received this year, he also received Volleyball Coach of the Year. Coach Baker says, “ I feel honored and appreciate the effort the girls gave this season. It was through their effort and love for the game that I achieved this honor.” This is Coach Baker’s 6th time achieving this honor.

Sports Round-Up

J. V. Girls

The J.V. Girls Basketball Team came out with a victory over West Brunswick on Thursday, November 29, 2007. The score was 37 to 5. The leading scorers were Natashia Jones, Montrexe

Blue, and Jamilia Thompson. Coach McGirt’s thoughts about the game were, “We played better defense and had less turnovers. We need to work on free-throws and outside shooting, along with our zone defense.” Their upcoming game will be tonight at home where they will take on East Columbus High School!

JV BOYS

Our JV Boy’s Basketball Team played a great game Thursday against West Brunswick. The score was 50-47; Coach Ryan McGirt said the team played so much better than they did Tuesday. He also said they played together and didn’t give up. The team played better defense and played as a team. They improved a lot on their defense and on their shooting. Coach McGirt said they played well in all four quarters but in overtime they found an excellent way to win. Skyler Brunson improved a lot and helped the team under the basket. The leading scorers were Desmond Parker, Derion Hinson and Brandon McDonald who shot a 3 pointer to make the game go into overtime. Congratulations to the JV Boys!

Varsity Girls

Shaniah Powell

The Varsity girls lost to West Brunswick last Thursday 35-53. They are now 0-2. Shaniah lead the team in scoring with 17 pts. Stephanie was second leading scoring with 8 pts; she also led in the team with 10 rebounds. Shaniah: once again I think there are some girls that need to step up including me on the team in help out with scoring and rebounding. We also need to learn all the plays.

Varsity Boys

The Varsity Boys played better in Thursday’s game. They improved because they lost by fewer points. The score was 60 to 72. Coach Mitch said the team was more together and they were more focused than the first game. The second half was where they improved the most. The score came from a number of players. They all played their best..

Bowling

The Girls Bowling Team beat South Robeson with a total of 439 for Fairmont and 314 for South Robeson. The 1st game was 121-83, 2nd game was 97-62, 3rd game was 106-77 and the 4th game was 115-92. The Second match the girls played, they lost against St.Pauls with a total of 424 for Fairmont and 445 for St.Pauls. The 1st game was 113-117, 2nd game was 116-140, 3rd game was 96-100 and the 4th game was 100-88. The overall record for the girls is 4-2.

The Boys Bowling Team beat Lumberton #2 with a total of 549 for Fairmont and 444 for Lumberton #2. The 1st game was 137-107, 2nd game was 93-133, 3rd game was 100-140 and the 4th game was 114-169. They also beat Red Springs with a total of 503 for Fairmont and 429 for Red Springs. The 1st game is 116-131, 2nd game was 105-127, 3rd game was 104-137 and the 4th game was 104-112. The overall record for the boys is 2-3.
