Fairfield Plantation News

www.fairfieldnc.com February, 2015

Work continues on the restoration of the Greenway Drive entrance. Repairs are being made to the Fairfield signs and the retaining wall has been repaired. Repairs to the lighting, irrigation, and landscaping will begin in the near future.

There was a lot of discussion at the annual meeting about the Fairfield Drive median. A motion was made and passed that a final decision (fence, landscape) would be made by March 30. Expect to hear more about this as the committee starts to develop potential solutions.

Committees are beginning to gear-up in anticipation of spring and summer activities. All committees desperately need members and fresh ideas. Contact any Board member (numbers and emails at the end of the newsletter) if you could help out on any committee.

Grounds Committee

The Grounds Committee and volunteers met on Sunday Feb 8th to begin developing a plan for the Fairfield Drive median. Eight residents participated in a walkthrough of the median and discussed various solutions and approaches. It was decided that the improvements would be a multi-phased project focusing first on with fence structures and then the landscaping improvements. Garden Committee

"To own a bit of ground, to scratch it with a hoe, to plant seeds and watch their renewal of life - this is the commonest delight of the race, the most satisfactory thing a man can do."...Charles Dudley Warner, author, editor, publisher (1829 - 1900)

Give us a couple of days of high 60’s and everyone is out enjoying our beautiful neighborhood. It is time to begin getting the soil ready down at the community garden. Vegetable garden planting guides list beets, broccoli, lettuce, onions, peas (green), spinach, and turnips to be planted in February and March. You can also use a plot to grow annual flowers as pollinators. Plan to plant your summer tomatoes, peppers, squash and cukes at the community garden. Some 5'x10’ plots are available and free to residents (first come …) who are ready to mulch, dig, plant and tend the plots. We plan to have a plot just for kids to bring plants, learn to plant, water, and weed. Our first garden workday of the year will be February 28th at 2:00. Projects to work on will be removing winter weeds and covering pathways with chips. Contact Vicki McGovern vmcgovern@windstream704-608-6235if you want more information.

A. Goals for the committee.

B. The current inventory and health of fish in the pond.

C. The use of the Community Amenity Pass as a Fishing License.

D. Pond rules.

Architectural Control

Well, it looks like we have six more weeks of winter…….

I thought it would be helpful to include a few helpful suggestions each month for yards and/or plants for some that are not familiar with month-to-month gardening:

1)  This is the time to plant dogwoods, broad-leaved evergreens, perennials, trees and shrubs,

roses (as soon after February 15th as possible, sow seed of candytuft, phlox, and cornflowers.

2)  Fertilize roses, lawns, and trees.

3)  Plant cuttings of shrubs. Make cuttings about 8 inches long, putting at least two buds

Underground. Use 1/3 perlite, 1/3 sand & 1/3 soil.

4)  Plats seeds of brussel sprouts, spring cabbage plants, kale, lettuce, onion sets, English and

Snap peas, radishes, spring spinach.

As a friendly reminder, please remember to bring your trash cans in as soon as possible (preferably the day the trash is picked up). The last few days have been extremely windy which causes them to blow over or further into the street.

Any changes and/or additions to property please fill out the ACC request form in duplicate and email or mail to Terry Evans, 7002 Stoney Ridge Road, Matthews, NC 28104 or email to Any questions, please feel free to give me call at 704-641-4882.
