STUDENT AND PARENT NOTIFICATION

8th to 9th grade

“Failing” CRCT = Retention

All 8th grade students, including Special Education students, will take the CRCT in April. All 8th grade students who “fail” the April CRCT in Reading or Math should attend summer school and MUST re-take the Reading and/or Math CRCT in June.

All 8th grade students who did not “Meet Expectations” on the April and June Reading or Math CRCT shall be retained in 8th grade.

State Rule:160-4-2-.11 No eighth grade student shall be promoted to the ninth grade if the student

does not achieve grade level on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test in reading

and the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test in mathematics

If the parent wishes to appeal the retention because it is in the best interest of the student to be placed in the 9th grade, then a Placement Committee Meeting must take place and there must be a unanimous decision to placethe student in the next grade. If the decision is not unanimous the student will be retained.

The basis for placement in the 9th grade must be one of the following criteria:

  1. the student has a CRCT score of 790 or higher in reading and 790 or higher in mathwith additional supporting evidence of satisfactory academic performance, and will be placed in high school courses purposefully designed to assist students with difficulties in achieving grade level standards (Example: Project Success, Math Support)
  2. the student will continue to be eligible to receive instructional support from Special Education services (in which case the IEP Committee is the Placement Committee)
  3. the student will be transitioning from Special Education services towards regular education and will be placed in high school courses purposefully designed to assist students with difficulties in achieving grade level standards (Example: Project Success, Math Support)
  4. the student will continue to eligible to receive instructional support from ESOL services.

Students who do not meet one of the above criteria but have been retained in an earlier grade (K-7) will be retained in 8th grade and will be placed in an alternative program(EDGE or REACH) to work on an individualized plan to earn credit towards a successfultransition to a regular high school program.

Students not meeting any of the above criteria will be retained in regular 8th grade.

All 8th grade students who are retained or placed, regardless of CRCT performance, must have a plan for individualized, differentiated, and accelerated instruction for the next school year.

At the Placement Committee Meeting, the 8th grade committee (of at least 1 administrator, 1 teacher(s), 1 parent) complete the front page of the Promotion/Retention Placement Committee Report and then send the report to the 9th grade who will then decide upon and document the appropriate instructional plan for the student.

The information in this notification has been explained and discussed with the student and with the parent(s).
