PROJECT TITLE (200 Characters max):

Determents of sub optimal screen rates for Breast Cancer in primary care practices.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION (Include design, methodology, data collection, techniques, data analysis to be employed and evaluation and interpretation methodology)

Rational:Previous QA/QI research shown that the rates of screening for breast cancer in an urban family practice were below recommended guidelines. If detected early breast cancer is essentially a curable disease.

Objective: Our purpose is to find out the reasons for sub-optimal screen rates in our urban family practice setting.

Methods: Retrospective chart review will be utilized to identify cases where screening was not performed when according to USPTF guidelines it was indicated. Demographics, insurance status and family status will be recorded to investigate independent variables. Focus groups will be conducted to obtain richer and less restricted data for interpretation.

Detailed Project Proposal:

The location of our research will be done in an urban, multiethnic, academic, primary care family practice center. We will be conducting focus groups across three categories of family physicians, with academic affiliation, based upon training level (eg: PGY1 & PGYII, PGYIII, attending), and one group of community based family physicians not affiliated with a specific academic residency program. Based upon our experience we propose to include 3-5 physicians per focus group. Each focus group will be recorded, and recordings will be analyzed using qualitative methods.

This study will be carried out at the Department of Family Medicine NJMS and HobokenUniversityHospital (formally St. Mary). An IRB will be developed prior to beginning of any plans to publish or present the findings of this QA/QI project outside of UMDNJ

WHAT WILL THE STUDENT LEARN FROM THIS EXPERIENCE?

Students will learn the basics of clinical research design and methodology. In addition basic statistics involved with qualitative and quantitative methodologies and their application to clinical issues will be learned. Data collection, chart review as well as the skills needed to interact with patients, staff, residents and attendings will be taught. Writing skills will also be taught. These include literature review and write up, manuscript writing and abstract and poster writing will be learned.
