CLINICAL ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

Clinical Track

Clinical Associate Professor of (): A faculty member who has demonstrated a high level of skill in teaching, advising, and/or mentoring, and as a practitioner, and who has contributed actively to clinical and researchprograms. The individual must have a regional reputation in his/her area of expertise. Scholarly activity will be given positive consideration. Service to the University, its affiliates or to the profession will be given positive consideration where a substantial role can be documented. Appointment at this rank is a term up to 5 years that may be renewed depending on the needs of the department.

Clinical Associate Professor promotion requirements: ClinicalService Contributions, Teaching, Advising, or Mentoring Excellence, Regional Reputation, Teaching/Service Time (100 hours/year)

Positive consideration is given to:Scholarly Productivity/Publications, Service Contributions (to University / professional), Teaching Leadership, Independent or Collaborative Research Program, External Research Grant Support, International or National Reputation

DPHB criteria for promotion to Clinical Associate Professor

(8/2003, revised 6/2017):

The Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior will follow the Alpert Medical School of Brown University’s criteria for promotion to Clinical Associate Professor. The candidate usually has served several years as Clinical Assistant Professor before being promoted, and sustained teaching of at least 100 hours per year.

All application for promotion will be evaluated by the DPHB Clinical Faculty Promotion Committee to assess the candidates teaching role within the department. Your contact in the Committee is the DPHB Training Director of the program in which you do the majority of your teaching. You must have at least 100 hours of teaching per year. If you do not have the required teaching role, please contact your training director. Faculty seeking promotion to the rank of Clinical Associate Professor are urged to contact the Committee for guidance early (usually around year 4) in their tenure.

In addition to these University criteria, the DPHB requires that specific academic productivity must also be demonstrated. Candidates will be required to have accomplished specific scholarly activities during the three years prior to promotion. This will consist of a minimum of three major accomplishments, which may include publications, major presentations, or a combination of publications and presentations. The following are activities that the Committee accepts as said scholarly activity; final determination of a candidate’s eligibility for promotion is at the discretion of the Committee.

  • Receipt of a teaching award

Service/Citizenship Contributions

  • Service on a DPHB committee (e.g., Residency/Internship/Fellowship Admissions, Diversity Committee, Technology Committee)
  • Service on a Medical school committee (e.g. CMFA, Office of Women in Medicine Committees)
  • Service on a University committee

Other

  • Standing member of editorial board of professional journal
  • Board examiner American Board of Professional Psychology
  • Standing member of a National Committee in your discipline

Appointment at this rank is for a term of up to 5 years that may be renewed depending on the needs of the department.

Clinical Professor promotion requirements: Clinical Service Contributions, Teaching, Mentoring, or AdvisingExcellence, Scholarly Productivity/Publications, National Reputation, Teaching/Service Time (100 hours/year)

Positive consideration is given to: Teaching Leadership, Independent or Collaborative Research Program, External Research Grant Support, International Reputation

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, CLINICIAN EDUCATOR

Clinician Educator Track

Associate Professor of () , Clinician Educator: Afaculty member who has demonstrated substantial involvement and documented recognition as excellent in teaching, advising, and/or mentoring, as a practitioner, and who has made important contributions to a clinical or research program. The individual must have a regional reputation in his/her area of expertise. Scholarly activity is required. Service to the University, its affiliates or to the profession will be given positive consideration where a substantial role can be documented. Appointment to this rank is for a term of up to 5 years that maybe be renewed depending on the needs of the department.

Associate Professor, Clinician Educator promotion requirements: Teaching Excellence, Clinical Service Contributions, Scholarly Productivity/Publications, Regional Reputation, Teaching/Service Time (200 hours/year).

Positive Consideration will be given to: Independent or Collaborative Research Program, External Research Grant Support, Teaching Leadership, International or National Reputation
