Methods of Teaching: lectures, individual research, group discussions, short presentations of students;

Supporting teaching materials: for lectures – visual (graphical) aids; for individual – great possibilities to use Internet and library research; copies secondary sources.

Form of Assessment: research paper (5 – 10 pages) and oral examination.

The course focuses on the role of civil society, with particular reference to Central and Eastern Europe. It aims to examine approaches to civil society institutions and their development, the relation of civil society to the state and to the private sector, reviewing the different ways that civil society organizations can promote democracy

Objectives of the Course:

The course will start with an overview of theories and concepts to understand the development of civil society and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), the position of NGOs within civil society and their role in Eastern and Central Europe. The second part of the course will deal with how NGOs influence the democratization and how they respond to social and political changes. Different practical examples from Central, Eastern and Southern Europe will be discussed. The third part of the course will focus on NGOs participation in international arena, the emergence and development of global civil society. The fourth part will review a number of critical issues facing NGOs such as sustainability, financial viability, advocacy, service provision and public image change. Finally, in the fifth part, the future roles of civil society institutions will be discussed, as well as their new roles in the context of globalization.
