  1. Approval of Minutes

The FDC approved the minutes of May 9, 2008.

  1. Chair

Bill Elliott was elected chair of the Faculty Development Committee (FDC) for the 2008-09 academic year.

  1. Carpenter II Grants

The FDC discussed strategies to review Carpenter II applications for the second half of the allocation period for 2008-09. If funding (~$13,600) is greater than the amount requested, the applications will be reviewed by the FDC and funding allocated accordingly. If the requested amount of funding for Carpenter II Grants is significantly more than the available funds, each committee member will evaluate applications as on a scale of 1 to 3, where 1 is exceptional, 2 is acceptable, and 3 is inappropriate. The evaluations will be tallied, providing the ranking for each Carpenter II application. These rankings, along with the role of the faculty member at the conference, organizer (O), presenter (P), or attendee (A), will determine the amount of funding awarded to each applicant. Faculty members solely attending conferences are encouraged to apply for Carpenter II grants; these applications will be considered along with those presenting and/or organizing events at conferences. In particular, new faculty members are strongly encouraged to apply if they are planning to attend a conference. Carpenter II applications are due Thursday, October 23, 2008.

  1. Carpenter II Grant

YoungheeKim received a Carpenter II Grant for the 2007-08 academic year that she was not able to use because she did not attend the conference outlined in her proposal. She is requesting to use this funding for a conference she will attend this year. The FDC has decided that she should resubmit a Carpenter II application for 2008-09; the FDC will prioritize her application since she will not carry forward the award from last year.

  1. Plans for the Year

In the fall term, we will review and recommend the second round of Carpenter II Grants for 2008-09. In the winter term, review and recommend Carpenter I Grants for 2009-2010. Finally in the spring: (1) Award and recommend first round of Carpenter II fundingfor faculty conference travel for the 2009-2010. (2) If funding is available in the 2009-2011 APSOU Bargaining Agreement, review and award Professional Development Grants. We will also discuss the applicability and purpose of these various funds to ensure that we are supporting the needs of professional development, scholarship, and conference travel for SOU faculty members.

  1. Other

The next FDC meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at noon in Library 216 to reviewCarpenter II Grant applications.

Respectfully submitted,
