Factors Affecting Solubility

Factors Affecting Solubility

SOLUBILITy AND Solvent lab

Name: ______8____ Date: ______

Problem: Does the type of solvent affect solubility?

Hypothesis: I think the type of solvent used ______affect solubility

because each solvent will have ______attractions towards the ______.

Variables: manipulated: ______

responding: ______

2-controlled: ______

Materials: oil, water, alcohol, 3-test tubes, 3-stoppers, measuring spoon, solute(sugar)

Procedures:

  1. _measure out 30 mL of water and pour into a ______
  2. Add one mL of the solute to the water, put the stopper on and invert the test tube ______times to mix. Keep your thumb on the stopper!
  3. Wait up to ____ seconds and see if the solute all dissolved. If solute is dissolved before 30 seconds continue to next step right away.
  4. If all the solute has dissolved, add another mL of solute. Repeat step 2 to 3 until you have at least 0.5 mL of solute left at the bottom of the test tube at the end of the 45 second wait time.
  5. When you have at least 0.5 mL of solute remaining in the test tube the solution is saturated. Record the number of mL that DID dissolve into the 30 mL of water.
  6. Dispose of your solution as directed by your teacher. Clean your test tube and stopper.
  7. Repeat steps 2 to 8 for each solvent provided.

Observations:Sugar: ____g/mL

SOLVENT
_____˚C / AMOUNT ADDED
(mL) / AMOUNT DISSOLVED
(____mL=____g) / SOLUBILITY
(___g/30mL@˚C ) / SOLUBILITY
(______g/100g@˚C)
(show work)
Water (30mL)
Oil (30mL)
Alcohol (30mL)

Analysis:

  1. Which solvent dissolved the most solute?
  1. Does the type of solvent affect solubility? ______Use the particle theory to explain why the solvent (______) dissolved the most solute.

Conclusion: I found that the type of solvent ______

______

______

______

______

______

______

______

TEMPERATURE LAB SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT

Name: ______8____ Due Date: ______

Problem: How does temperature affect solubility of a solution?

Hypothesis: I think as temperature of the solvent increases the solubility of a solution will ______

because _as the temperature increases the ______between the atoms ______leaving ______room for the solute particles.

Variables: manipulated: ______

responding: ______

3-controlled: ______

Materials: water, sugar, measuring spoons, thermometers, ice bath, hot plate,

different hot water baths, test tube, stopper

  1. Procedures: _measure out 30 mL of water and pour into a ______
  2. Place test tube into the water bath.
  3. Add one mL of the solute to the test tube water, put the stopper on and invert the test tube ______times to mix. Keep your thumb on the stopper!
  1. Wait up to ____ seconds and see if the solute all dissolved. If solute is dissolved before 30 seconds continue to next step right away.
  1. If all the solute has dissolved, add another mL of solute. Repeat step 2 to 3 until you have at least 0.5 mL of solute left at the bottom of the test tube at the end of the 30 second wait time.
  1. When you have at least 0.5 mL of solute remaining in the test tube the solution is saturated. Record the number of mL that DID dissolve into the 30 mL of water.
  1. Dispose of your solution as directed by your teacher. Clean your test tube and stopper.

Observation: Sugar: _1.6__g/mL

TEMPERATRE OF SOLVENT
(˚C) / AMOUNT SOLUTE ADDED
(mL) / AMOUNT OF SOLUTE DISSOLVED
(___mL = ____g) / SOLUBILITY (___g/30mL@˚C) / SOLUBILITY
(_____g/100g@˚C)

Analysis:

  1. Draw a line graph showing the results. The manipulated variable goes on the ____ axis and the responding variable goes on the ____axis.
  1. Explain why each test tube was placed back into the water bath?
  1. When washing cloth many detergents are powders or liquids. What is a surfactant? What does a surfactant do? (Use your textbook)
  1. Why would people use warm water to wash clothes in?
  1. Look up thermal pollution. Compare thermal pollution (solubility of a gas) to solubility of most solids.

Conclusion: I found that as the temperature of solvent increases solubility will ______. As seen when the solvent was ___˚C we dissolved _____grams of sugar and when the solvent was ___˚C we dissolved _____grams of sugar. This is because as the temperature of a solution increases the solvents particles move ______apart thus leaving ______room for solute to ______into the solvent.
