LINUX as a Foundation for a Dynamic Infrastructure for a Smarter Planet

Linux is a catalyst to create a dynamic infrastructure supporting smarter planet initiatives. All systems are becoming interconnected, instrumented and intelligent, leading to new savings and efficiency –and new possibilities for progress. Linux has unique attributes to enable this:

·  Interconnected-- Linux is the connector supporting multiple hardware platforms from embedded devices to supercomputers. Linux’s flexible cross-platform support combined with SOA architecture supports dynamic business processes. There is portability of applications and speed of support for new platforms. Linux is modular and customizable with flexible usage licensing. Linux has an affinity with virtualization, and Linux is supported on major hypervisors: z/VM, VMware, Hyper-V, PowerVM, Xen and KVM.

·  Instrumented-- Linux powers routers, hubs, enterprise service buses and servers around the world. Linux enables mobile phones, traffic sensors, and GPS devices.

·  Intelligent-- More than 90 percent of the world top 500 supercomputers run Linux, including the world’s fastest. Linux runs analytical and business intelligence solutions.

IBM Linux and Dynamic Infrastructure News for April 28, 2009

Today’s news strengthens the options for clients who want to leverage Linux to build a dynamic infrastructure. Linux supported by many of the hardware and middleware products that IBM has announced -- allowing clients to get the flexibility and cost-reduction benefits of IBM's Linux solutions while taking advantage of the latest technology to support dynamic infrastructures. IBM already ships more than 500 software products that run natively on Linux, and Linux runs on all IBM hardware.

Here are some of the product highlights of today’s Linux announcements:

·  IBM Cognos 8 Business Intelligence for Linux on System z provides fast and easy access to the most up-to-date business information from any location on handheld devices such as BlackBerries.

·  New storage hardware products that support Linux.

·  New routers and switches that support Linux environments.

·  The IBM Service Management Center for Cloud Computing, which now includes a new Application Security for Cloud environments, runs on Linux.

·  The new IBM Tivoli Foundations appliances are built on Lotus Foundations technologies and leverage SUSE Linux.

·  System z BC maximum memory increased to 248GB, making it possible for clients to consolidate more Linux workloads and the z10 BC memory size enhancements directly benefiting larger Linux workloads.

·  New System x appliance based offerings and two new 2-socket tower servers, System x3400 M2 and x3500 M2 run Linux. The new IBM System x offerings announced on March 30, 2009 run Linux: http://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/27106.wss

·  IBM POWER-based systems:

·  The new BladeCenter JS23 and JS43 Express are the premier blades for 64-bit applications running Linux and other operating systems.

·  Faster processors were added to the Power 520 and Power 550 Express servers for better performance of Linux applications and for consolidation of Linux applications with AIX and IBM System i applications in a virtualized environment.

·  Novell SLES 11 for POWER provides support for PowerVM Active Memory Sharing for optimized memory utilization and savings on Linux

·  It's easier to order and renew Linux on POWER through IBM with Linux subscriptions for existing servers

·  There's preinstalled Linux and SLES 11 support for IBM Installation Toolkit for Linux V3.1.

·  SurePOS 300 Retail Sales Solution is available with support for IBM Retail Environment for SUSE Linux.
