The risen Jesus revealed himself to his disciples again. This time Peter was his focus. Peter is asked to express his sincere love for Jesus and his willingness to serve and follow Jesus.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM
YEAR OF MERCY
Response: I will praise you, Lord,for you have rescued me.
I will praise you, Lord, you have rescued me
and have not let my enemies rejoice over me.
O Lord, you have raised my soul from the dead,
restored me to life from those who sink into the grave.
Sing psalms to the Lord, you who love him,
give thanks to his holy name.
His anger lasts but a moment; his favour through life.
At night there are tears, but joy comes with dawn.
The Lord listened and had pity.
The Lord came to my help.
For me you have changed my mourning into dancing;
O Lord my God, I will thank you for ever.
Response: I will praise you Lord, for you have rescued me.
SECOND READING: Revelations 5: 11-14
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:
Alleluia, alleluia!
C Christ is risen, the Lord of all creation;
H he has shown pity on all people.
Alleluia!
GOSPEL: John 21: 1-19
REFLECTION on the GOSPEL
Do you love me?
The disciples gather to fish, but without success. Only when summoned by the Risen Lord, whom they do not recognise, and only in obedience to him are they successful in their mission of being fishermen. In many ways, this section of the story fulfils something that Jesus said to his disciples in his last discourse: ‘Without me, you can do nothing.’
Peter, in recognising the Lord, rushes to him, thus showing that his later profession of love is based on fact and not only in word. The fish number 153 varieties … with the Lord, they are not only successful in their task, but that their mission… reaches out to all peoples and all nations. The Church is called by the Lord, nourished by the Lord and sent by the Lord, to the whole world.
… Who is to lead this tiny Christian community? Peter has always been the leader, but has denied Jesus three times, and so three times Jesus tests his love. Through this test of love, Jesus also appoints him as pastor of his flock. The ‘feeding’ which Jesus has done by the side of the lake must now be done by Peter and his successors wherever the Church may find itself. Peter’s past is now his past. His commitment to Jesus in love will lead him into God’s future… full of many surprises and unexpected suffering…
The central character in this story is Peter, but it has been written, received and handed down through the history of the Church as a blueprint for all who claim to be serving the Lord in love. Jesus’ thrice repeated questioning of Peter’s love has brought him to a total commitment to the man he once denied. But it does more than that. Having obtained a confession of love, Jesus teaches all who love and serve in the Church that true Christian service calls for the need always to be open to the ways of God. As in the case of Peter, such openness can sometimes cause pain; it may mean that we will be broken open.

ST JOSEPH’S PARISH PRIMARY SCHOOL
Our final week of school before our Autumn break and all of the children seem ready for a well- earned rest. Last week five of our children attended the Polding Swimming Carnival which was held down at the Olympic stadium at Homebush. Monica Moore competed in the SWD fifty metre freestyle race while the other four children Tom Wylie, Connor Baker, Ella Howarth and Kaleb Lonergan Palmer competed in the small schools relay competition. The school is very proud of their achievements. Our school swimming lessons finish this Friday with all of the children gaining in confidence and competence. Our chickens have been laying every day so today is egg and lettuce sandwich day at the school canteen. Yum!

WHAT’S IN A WORD: MERCY
The Year of Mercy is about our attitudes of being as well as the works of service we have done.Bill Huebsch writes:
… we have also withheld Mercy. We burned at the stake thousands judges harshly as heretics. We treated non-Catholics as less than ourselves, even suggesting they could not go to heaven. We failed to stand up for the poor… we allowed ourselves to become part of the status quo in the West, earning more money and wielding more power, but we did not always use that power to end poverty, fight discrimination… reduce environmental degradation, or support immigrants and refugees.
This mixed history is typical of us humans. We’ve always been a resistant lot when it comes to following the teachings of Jesus. From the disciple Peter onward, we have not understood him. Or… we have denied him… when we see him in the poor and suffering of the world… in our homes, neighbourhoods, towns and parishes. How does your experience of seeing so many people in need shape your response to them? / Readings for next week:

JOKE
Our daughters don't seem to share the same need to iron that we do. Staying recently with our daughter, I asked for her iron and ironing board – which she retrieved from the far reaches of her storage room.
I was about to plug the iron in when my grandson walked by and asked, ‘Gramma, is that going to be noisy?
