ExxonMobil opens time capsule

Baton Rougeemployercelebrates 100 years

BATON ROUGE- Today marks 100 years of ExxonMobil in Baton Rouge, and the company is celebrating by opening a 20-year-old time capsule. On April 13, 1909, the headline of the Baton Rouge Daily State-Times read,“Five million dollar company to build two million dollar plant here.” It was on that date that the original corporate charter was granted by the state of Louisiana giving the Standard Oil Company of Louisiana, now known as ExxonMobil, the ability to operate.

One hundred years later, employees are kicking off a year-long celebration of community partnership in Baton Rouge.

Today, in the first of several anniversary events, ExxonMobil willunveil items found in a time capsule buried in the refinery’s courtyard in 1989. One item discovered when the time capsule wasunearthed by a small team in January, was instructions to a 20-year-old “Back to the Future” trivia contest. Employees from 1989 took their best guesses at predicting 2009 Baton Rouge trivia, including whether LSU would win a national championship and where road construction would be on today’s Baton Rouge interstates. During the event, the winner from the 1989 contest will be awarded a gold coin found in the time capsule. Members of the 1989 anniversary committee in will be on hand to award the prize. Besides the contest instructions, other items found in the time capsule include pop culture items, historicartifacts and company records.

Other company memorabilia will be on display as well as a preview of select historic Standard Oil photos from a new LSU Hill Memorial Library Exhibit. The J. A. Bechtold collection, courtesy of Marna Bass Shortess, openingon April 13, features photos of early operations at the refinery and construction processes powered by horse and buggy.

The same time capsule will be filled again and buried later this year with instructions to unearth in 2034 at the 125th anniversary. Since employees were impressed with the structural quality of the zinc-coated time capsule there is no hesitation with using the time capsule again. During Monday’s event employees will make suggestions for items to include in the new time capsule.

Three public events later this year will also celebrate the anniversary. On Sunday, June 7,ExxonMobil is hosting a memorabilia "road show" in partnership with the Louisiana State Museum,on Sunday, Aug. 9 the Foundation for a Historical Louisiana will host a panel discussion with company retirees at the Louisiana State Museum and on Saturday, Sept. 26, the company will participate in North Baton Rouge Neighborhoods United’s annual Meet Your Neighbor Dayat the Delmont Service Center.

Private events include a reception saluting our community partnersat the Old Governor’s Mansion on Thursday, July 23 and acelebration for employees and retirees at the Baton Rouge River Center, Louisiana Art and ScienceMuseumand U.S.S. Kidd on Saturday, Nov. 14.
