Under 12 League

Castlepollard Celtic 0 UCL Harps 8

Castlepollard were thoroughly outplayed by UCL on Sunday 26th Sept in Fagan's Field. The final result, however, did not reflect the positive effort and endeavor shown by the Castlepollard under 12's. Despite missing three key players, Castlepollard kept pace with UCL for the first fifteen minutes when unfortunately to give away two quick goals. From thereon, the first half was dominated by Celtic. There were a couple of opportunities from open play to get them back into the game and two free kicks were narrowly missed either side of half time. UCL Harps struck just before the half time whistle making the score 3 - 0.

The second half started brightly with a couple of substitutes attempting to change the course of the game, but Harps caught them on the break scoring a fourth goal to start a tough thirty minutes for the home side. Four more goals followed for UCL, but our Under 12's did create several chances. At 5 - 0 a penalty chance was missed, and then the Castlepollard heads started to drop. Lessons were learnt and positives taken for the SFAI Cup game next Sunday against Arrow Harps in County Sligo.

Castlepollard Celtic 1 Camlin United 2

Castlepollard went ahead in this game on fifteen minutes when Conor O Grady fired home from close range after a scramble in the Camlin box. The home side’s lead lasted well into the second half before the impressive visitors drew level with a short range effort that gave the home keeper John McCarthy no chance in goal. Celtic had chances through Daly and Rabbitt to retake the lead but disaster struck with just ten minutes remaining when the United centre forward stole in to score a lovely solo effort. Castlepollard threw everything forward to try and salvage a point and they nearly pulled it off but both Rabbitt and Sean Lancaster saw good shots well saved by the Camlin keeper. No game next week for the Under 13’s so the squad can regroup.

Best for Castlepollard – John McCarthy, Conor O Grady, Pete Connor and

Man of the Match – Andrew Keating

Under 13 Girls League

Newtown AFC 1 Castlepollard Celtic 1

Celtic’s Under 13 girls traveled to Newtownforbes on Sunday afternoon to take on the local Newtown kingpins in the first game of the new Longford Girls League season. Castlepollard suffered a big defeat last year to Newtown but straight from the off you could see that the Westmeath girls have made huge strides under team Manager Ian Fivey this season. Katie Egan and Melissa Fivey both had good early chances for the visitors before the home side broke the deadlock on fifteen minutes when their centre forward squeezed the ball between the post and the diving Castlepollard keeper Zoey Cheevers. Castlepollard continued to give as good as they got and battled throughout the first half matching their opponents at every turn. Led brilliantly by team Captain Breean O Reilly the Castlepollard girls fought for every ball. With the slightest of margins between the team going into the second half it was the Castlepollard girls that took the initiative to the local Newtown girls. Good work from O Reilly and Jenny Tierney set up Katie Egan out right, Katie fired in a low and hard cross that was met beautifully by her sister Marie to fire home leaving the home keeper stranded. Newtown through everything forward but the Celtic defence of Niamh McCarthy and O Reilly held firm. This was a great result for the Castlepollard girls that will hold them in good stead for the remainder of the season.

Best for Celtic; Niamh McCarthy, Breean O Reilly, Melissa Fivey and Player of the Match was Katie Egan.

Team; Zoey Cheevers, Breean O Reilly, Niamh McCarthy, Jenny Kiernan, Melissa Fivey, Marie Egan, Jessica Tierney, Katie Egan, Roisin Fagan, Lucy Murray, Cameron Birney.

Castlepollard Celtic 11 Multyfarnham Youth Club 0

Castlepollard continued their great start to the season with a comprehensive win over local Westmeath rivals Multyfarnham Youth Club.

Although leading four nil at the half time break Celtic were finding the going hard against a resolute Multy team. Team Captain Israel Dowling opened the scoring on ninety seconds with a toe poke from six yards after receiving a pin point pass from Aaron Jackson. Jackson made it two nil one minute later when he side footed the ball home from close range after a super corner from Warren Casserly. Jackson hit the post minutes later before Micheal Daly, Ian Kilcoyne and Ciaran Fagan all went close as the home side surged forward. Ian Kilcoyne hit the crossbar on twenty two minutes. Two minutes later Jackson got his second when he headed home a Stephen Ryding cross. Jackson completed his hat-trick two minutes later after he headed his second of the day, this time from a Casserly corner.

Castlepollard started the second half strongly and Casserly fired just over on two minutes. Daly then hit the post before Casserly made it five nil on ten minutes after good approach play by Jackson. Casserly had his hat-trick five minutes later when he side footed the ball home from a Ian Kilcoyne pass before he ran in from his own half to round the visiting keeper. Multyfarnham then had a spell of control and were very unlucky not to score a few of their own but every time it looked likely the home defence of Duignam and Lonican managed to make a telling tackle. Kilbride in the Castlepollard goal made a super save on twenty minutes when he dived low to his right to push the ball around the post. Celtic cleared the resulting corner quickly and raced down the pitch to score another when Casserly carried the ball from the half way line to round the advancing keeper. Casserly made it a day to remember on thirty minutes when he got his fifth of the day after good inter play with Ryding. Micheal Daly finally got on the score sheet right at the end after Dowling put him through, with only the keeper to beat the young midfielder coolly slotted the ball home.

This win leaves Castlepollard top of the table but there are much harder games still to come. In four weeks time the Westmeath side must travel to Donegal to take on local side Copany Rovers in the second round of the SFAI Cup. Before that they must play a Galway side in the second round of the Connaught Cup. Exiting times lay ahead for The Castlepollard Celtic Under 14 squad.

Best for Celtic; Aaron Jackson, Stephen Ryding, Scott Duignam and Man of the Match was Warren Casserly.

Team; Niall McCormack, Stephen Ryding, Aaron O Reilly, Scott Duignam, Daniel Lonican, Ciaran Fagan, Michael Daly, Warren Casserly, Aaron Jackson, Ian Kilcoyne, Israel Dowling, Colm Kilbride, Ciaran Doyle and Reuben Byrnes.
