4Graphic File Specifications

1Introduction

This document describes our file naming and directory structure requirements for Book Content. Refer also to the specific requirements documents for the deliverables you are preparing (e.g., DART, Online Books) for details about additional requirements.

General guidelines:

  • Case matters! File and directory names must be lowercase with the exception of the ISBN directory when it contains the check-digit X; the X should be uppercase.
  • The extension must reflect the format of the content.
  • File and directory names should only contain standard alphanumeric characters, and must never contain spaces.
  • File and directory names must not contain characters that are prohibited in the DOS and UNIX operating systems, which include, but are not necessarily limited to @, &, %, /, |, \, [, ], (, ).

2Directory structure

2.1General Directories

All the possible directories are listed below; your Production contact will inform you as to what deliverables are required for each project. A deliverable should only contain directories for which there is content; empty directories should not be included. Additional directories other than those described in this specification should not be created without prior discussion with your Production contact.

All the PostScript and PDF files for the complete publication should be delivered in the ps/ or pdf/ directory, respectively, while the source files for the front matter, each chapter, the back matter, and any ancillary material should be delivered within the relevant sub-directories that reflect the content type.

Directory / Sub-directory name / Sub-sub-directory
name / Notes
0471555555 / ISBN for the deliverables, with no hyphens or spaces. If the ISBN directory when it contains the check-digit X, the X should be uppercase.
There may be more than one ISBN for a project with print/online/ebook components; your Production contact will tell you which ISBN to use for each set of deliverables.
For full-text XML, you may be asked to use a project directory below the ISBN directory, in which all the subsequent subdirectories will fall down a level.
pdf / All PDF files of the publication; note there are no subdirectories, only files
ps / All PostScript files of the publication; note there are no subdirectories, only files
fmatter / text_s

table_s / All source files and graphics for frontmatter
intro / text_s
image_s

table_s / All source files and graphics for Introduction (only if the introduction is not in the frontmatter and is not a numbered chapter).
chnn / text_s
image_s

table_s / All source files and graphics for the chapter, where nn is the chapter number.
For full-text XML, this directory is named the same as the chapter/article ID and text_s directory is omitted.
For Online Books in InterScience, header XML goes in the text_s directory.
bmatter / text_s
image_s

table_s / All source files and graphics for backmatter
endpapers / text_s
image_s

table_s / All source files and graphics for endpapers
genimage / image_s

table_s / Graphics that are used in more than one place in a publication or do not have a fixed location within a publication.
control / Style sheet/macro file/ or any control files , including font manifest document and templates
ancmat / templates/
pdf/
ps /
text_s
image_s

table_s
sound_a
sound_s animat_a / Directory that holds subdirectories and files for material that is published ancillary to the main publication (e.g., a CD that is bound into the book)
dart_metadata / DART metadata files:
0471555555_message.xml
0471555555_content.xml

2.2Graphics Directories

Note: Equation and table directories will only have content (be used) if equations are created separate from the content and are to be provided as graphics.

Directory / Notes
image_s / Source files for images. Files in the image_s directory must be editable and must match exactly the archived version of the graphic.
Where ChemDraw has been used, eqn_s/ should contain the application files (.cdx).
image_a / Archive version of images (e.g., .eps)
eqn_s / Source files for equations. Files in the eqn_s directory must be editable and must match exactly the archived version of the graphic.
Where MathML, TeX, or XML has been used, the equations will be produced directly from the source files and therefore do not need to be provided as graphics.
Where ChemDraw has been used, eqn_s/ should contain the application files (.cdx).
eqn_a / Archive versions of equations
table_s / Source file of tables
table_a / Archive version of tables

For full-text XML, the following additional directories may be requested

Directory / Notes
image_m / Magnified version of images
image_n / Normal-sized version of images
image_t / Thumbnail version of images (note that thumbnail files should always be gifs, regardless of format of the archival graphic)
eqn_n / Normal-sized versions of equations
table_n / Normal-sized version of tables

3Filenames

In the following sections:

  • nn represents the chapter number (pad with leading zero if necessary). For publications with more than 99 chapters, the number can be represented using an alpha and numeric character combination; i.e., a0 = 100, a1 = 101, … a9 = 109, b0 = 110, b1 = 111…b9=119, z0 = 250, z1 = 251, … z9 = 259
  • .aaa represents the appropriate file extension

3.4Graphics

The basic syntax is:

  • a prefix based on the content in which the graphic appears (e.g., chapter, front matter)
  • a code to identify the content type (see below)
  • a three-digit number to indicte sequence (use leading zeros)
  • an optionallast character to be used only when associated objects consist of parts, e.g., a, b, c, that are created as separate files. If the parts of a figure are all contained within the one file, the standard filename should be used.
  • Graphics in the Introduction should follow the naming convention given for graphics for inserts.
  • Graphics of generic images begin with the letters gen followed by the fixed alpha code and number.

Codes
a = animation / p = insert/plate
c = chemical equation / h = scheme
e = equation / z = sound
x = exhibit / s = chemical structure
f = figure / t = table
g = raw graphic / u = unnumbered table
i = icon

3.4.3Graphics in Full-Text XML

The naming of graphics in full-text XML projects may vary from the naming defined here. Your Production contact will instruct you accordingly.

3.5Standard File Format Extensions

Standard file format extensions are required in all file names. For specifics on standard extensions, see

Greyscale / JPEG (Low) / 8-bit / 160 dpi
Color / JPEG (Low) / 8-bit / 160 dpi
* Thumbnail Rule: The rule is ‘downsample in proportion’ so that the longest dimension becomes 120 pixels’.
NOTES
Archive: All TIFF files should have ‘previews’ (appropriate to the color depth) and LZW compression. All EPS files should have a TIFF ‘preview’ (appropriate to the color depth).
JPEG (Med) means ‘medium’ compression.
JPEG (Low) means ‘low’ compression (high quality).
