EXPONENTS
Exponents are those little numbers that are next to a number.
EXAMPLE: 4 3 in this number the ‘3’ is the exponent.
the ‘4’ is called the base.
Exponents tell you how many time you must multiply the base.
43 means you must multiply 4 three times DO NOT add 4 three times.
EXAMPLE:
4 x 4 x 4 = 56 if you add 4 + 4 + 4 = 12
so you see adding 4 three times gives you a different answer than if you
multiply 4 three times.
Exponents can also be called powers: EXAMPLE 4 to the power of 3 = 43
EXPANDED notation: this means they want you to spread out the numbers.
EXAMPLE: 56 expanded looks like 5 x 5 x 5 x 5 x 5 x 5 =
EXPOTENTIAL notation: this means they want you to take the spread out
number and show it using exponents;
EXAMPLE: 6 x 6 x 6 x 6 expontentially looks like 64
STANDARD notation: this means they want you to figure out the answer.
EXAMPLE: 24 = in standard form it looks like this = 16
2 x 2 x 2 x 2 =16
REMEMBER
The BASE is the number that you multiply
The EXPONENT is the number that tells you how many bases you need
Always put TIMES signs between your bases
