EXPLORATORY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY PROJECT

Name:______Teacher: Mrs. Alderfer

Project Objective: To increase physical activity in Methacton High School students and create awareness of various exercise options available within the community.

Directions:

Each student will select from one of the three exercise options listed below. This assignment is to be completed outside of school as an extension of the MHS Physical Education program. Each student will have one month to complete the assignment.

Due Date:______*Circle the option (below) that you plan to do

OPTION 1 – Students will take advantage of a trial membership at a local fitness facility (i.e. “The Gym” or “IRoy Sport and Fitness” or “Royalty Cross Fit” or “LA Fitness” or “Kinetix”). Each student will be expected to attend the gym at least three times and spend a minimum of 45 minutes per session working out. For each session, students must complete a workout log and have it signed by a staff member. If you currently attend a gym or fitness center, you will be expected to try something new for at least one of the sessions.

OPTION 2 – Students will be expected to work out with a friend(s) or family member(s) a minimum of four times. Each workout must last a minimum of 30 minutes and must take place on separate dates. This exercise opportunity should be in addition to what you may currently be doing in school or in a MHS sport or activity. For each session, students must complete a workout log and have it signed by a parent / guardian. Some examples would be YouTube fitness videos, fitness apps, walk/running around your neighborhood or at a park, playing flag football (or some other sport), using exercise equipment that you have in your home, etc…

OPTION 3 – Students will research three different fitness / exercise options within their community that provide opportunities to become physically fit. These exercise options might include, but are not limited to the following: community parks, rock gyms, yoga, swimming, kayaking, a 5k walk/run, etc. Students will be required to participate in at least one of the three researched options and spend a minimum of 45 minutes during the session. Students must provide an activity log and parent signature for the activity which they participated in. Finally, students must provide a typed document which includes a detailed description, the cost, the location and reason for researching each of the three activities. This description should be a ½ a page for each activity. *This option is best for those individuals that are presently involved in regular fitness activities – this will allow you to try something new.
