Hastings College PROUDLY HOSTS:

The Second BroncoLopE Tournament

September 2014

The coaches and students of Hastings College (Broncos) and the University of Nebraska-Kearney (Lopers) invite you and your students to a tournament on November 15 & 16, 2014.

This tournament is an open invitational for all undergraduate competitors who meet the eligibility requirements of the AFA-NIET. Unless an event is very small, we will offer two preliminary rounds and finals in the eleven AFA events. We will be offering Interteam Duo as a fundraising event. Find your favorite coach or team member from another team and join forces to foster friendship and fun at our tournament (see below for specifics). All finalists will be recognized with trophies.

Entries must be submitted to Speechwire before 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 11, 2014. The speechwire address is Those coaches who have run or attended tournaments with last minute cancellations realize the trauma caused to the tournament director and the students. Hoping to discourage this, fees will be assessed on the basis of information received as of 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Changes made at the tournament or after noon on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 will be assessed a $20 nuisance fee.

Fees for the tournament are $5 per slot covered and an additional $12 per uncovered slot. One judge covers six slots. We request that you bring ample judges—our uncovered slot fee will be used to compensate the strong pool of alumni who are hired to adjudicate the tournament.

A $3 fee per student per day will be included in your entry fee as food options around the campus are limited. We will be providing Big Dally’s Deli sandwiches and pizza for lunch.

We look forward to seeing you at the swing. If you have any questions email or call Dr. Kittie Grace at or 402-902-9331(cell) or email Aaron Blackman at

Sincerely,

Kittie Grace & Aaron Blackman

Awards & Tournament Rules

Students may enter three events in each flight. Any student entered in four events or more is eligible for individual sweeps. Students will be advanced to finals based on cumulative rank and rate. We reserve the right to advance fewer than six contestants if an event is small. Contestants who receive a first place rank from two of three final round judges will be recognized as tournament champion. Ties in final rounds will be broken by judges’ preference followed by cumulative rating. Ties for Individual Sweepstakes will be broken by comparative ranks in final rounds followed by the number of final rounds, followed by number of first-place ballots, second-place ballots, etc. in final rounds. Ties for school sweepstakes will be broken by number of finals for each team followed by comparative ranks.

Team points will be awarded according to student’s placement in final rounds (10 points for 1st place, 8 points for 2nd place, 6 points for 3rd place, 4 points for 4th place, 2 points for 5th place, and 1 point for 6th place, ½ point for 7th-semi-finalists). All first year students from Hastings College will be allowed to compete both days of the tournament.

Events

All events entered in the tournament must meet the requirements of the AFA national tournament. The rules for Dramatic Interpretation and Program Oral Interpretation are consistent with those suggested by the AFA-NIET.

Fund Raising Event

In honor of National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week, the forensics teams of Hastings College and University of Nebraska- Kearney will proudly offer Impromptu Interteam Duo as a festival event fundraiser. Proceeds will go to benefit the Maryland Living Center, a transitional living facility for homeless and aged-out foster youth, located in Hastings, NE.

In the friendly spirit of the Broncolope tournament, Interteam Duo attempts to combine the two pillars of forensic competition: friendship and advocacy. Interteam Duo is open to ALL speechies, past and present (that’s right, coaches! Dust off those black books!) Teams will be judged on creativity and how well they are able to come together in the spirit of the activity!

Basic Rules:

-No touching, no looking... You get it.

-Prelims: Teams will be given a scenario in-round and will have ten minutes to prepare and perform. Time allocation is entirely up to the team and will not be considered in judging.

-Final Round: Teams will be given five words which must be used during the duration of their performance. Teams will still have ten minutes to prep and perform and may place themselves in any scenario they see fit OR perform any pre-prepared piece/ cutting of their choice.

-ITD will run both days of competition in B flight.

- The top three teams will advance to the final round which will be run in front of the whole tournament as awards are being tabbed.

- Black books are not required; however, they may be used should the team desire the opportunity for props.

-Points earned in interteam duo will not be applied to overall team sweepstakes awards.

Partners:

-Partners choose each other or may opt to be assigned to a partner if they cannot find one but would still like to participate. An even number of competitors is not guaranteed by the tournament staff.

- Partners cannot be from the same team.

-Coaches and students are encouraged to pair with each other as long as the two have never coached and/or competed on the same team.

-Coaches who are allowed to participate will be limited to ensure enough B-flight prelim judges are available on the day of the tournament.

Judging:

As coaches and competitors will be competing, both coaches and competitors will be allowed to judge. If competitors have B-flight of the tournament off and would like to judge ITD, we ask that you indicate this when you register. It’s just for fun and philanthropy (and bragging rights), y’all. While tournament staff will do their best to keep rounds as un-biased as possible, the use of “clean” judges cannot be guaranteed. We ask that those who judge remain as objective as possible in the spirit of the activity.
