BONSAI FOR BEGINNERS stage 1. (A, B). £42.00 Inc lunch & young tree. This workshop is for students with little or no experience of bonsai. we will cover many of the techniques used in outdoor/indoor bonsai cultivation. Included in the fee will be a young tree to get you started in bonsai. A range of more substantial stock will also be available to purchase on the day if required.

BEGINNERS stage 2. BONSAI REFINING. (A, B, C, D). £42.00 Inc lunch. This w/shop is available for students with some experience of bonsai, or who have attended stage 1. I will cover more in depth styling as this workshop may be integrated with more experienced students, with plenty of styling and refining being carried out. The emphasis will be on the student spending more hands-on practical time and also learning by observation of other more experienced students working on their trees.

BEGINNERS stage 3. BONSAI REFINING. (A, B, C, D). £42.00 Inc lunch. This w/shop is suitable for students with some experience of bonsai, or who have attended stages 1 and 2. Students will be taught more on the aesthetics of bonsai, the more advanced styles will be covered. Students are encouraged to bring along their own trees for some help and advice. This workshop may be integrated with more experienced students giving plenty of learning opportunities.

CREATING BONSAI WITH FRUITING SPECIES. (A, B, C, D). £55.00 Inc lunch & crab apple bonsai tree *

This workshop will be dedicated to fruiting species which can make very good bonsai which also have the added pleasure of flowering first. There are many species which can be used, such as Crab apples. Pyrus. Citrus varieties. Quince etc.

Included in the course fee is a crab apple bonsai, approx 5/6 year old.

CREATING TANUKI STYLED DRIFTWOOD BONSAI. (A, B, C, D). £42.00 Inc lunch. This w/shop will give students the chance to see how to develo9p Tanuki styles (or commonly referred to as wrap-around). Students have suitable material to work on, they are welcome to bring it along. Some material will be available to purchase on the day.

CRYPTOMERIA, CYPRESS & JUNIPER AS BONSAI. (A, B, C, D). £42.00 Inc lunch. This workshop will be devoted to developing cryptomeria (Japanese cedar), cypress and junipers as bonsai, from young plants to working on larger material. A large range of trees will be available to purchase on the day, these include many varieties of cypress, including the popular hinoki cypress. Various species of cryptomeria including some very dwarf species, pre-trained twisted trunk itoigawa junipers imported from Japan , etc.

EVERGREEN POTTING/REPOTTING WORKSHOPS. (A, B, C, D). £42.00 Inc lunch. This w/shop is for those who want help in potting or re-potting their evergreen bonsai. A range of potting compost/soils and pots will be available to purchase on the day.

FOREST OR MULTI TREE PLANTINGS. (A, B, C, D). £70.00 Inc lunch & trees*. The theme will be constructing forest or group plantings. You will receive a training tray, compost, and a selection of young trees (aged 2-4 years old). You can choose from a large range of species, call for availability.

GRAFTING TECHNIQUES. PRACTICAL INTERACTIVE WORKSHOP. (A,B,C,D). £58.00 Inc lunch & materials

You have the opportunity to learn many grafting techniques used in plant production and bonsai culture. Some techniques include thread grafting, in-arch grafting, root grafting etc and basic grafting to produce the tree in the first instance. Pre-grafting and after care required. Included in the course fee will be 5 small pines to graft onto and take away.

JAPANESE MAPLE WORKSHOP. (A, B, C, D). £42.00 Inc lunch. This w/shop will give students the chance to work on their own maples or purchase material from a massive range of Japanese maples, also some large field grown Trident maples.

JAPANESE WHITE PINE MASTERCLASS . (C, D). From £250-£500 Inc lunch and tree*. You have the opportunity to purchase from a good range of Japanese white pines, including Zuishio and Kokonoe and pure white pines. These trees have been imported from Japan as good pre-styled trees to style and refine. Wonderful opportunity to obtain a large white pine for your collection at a reasonable price. This workshop will be restricted to a maximum of 5 people. You are welcome to bring your own tree along at a course fee of £42.00

MASTER CLASS WITH LARGE FIELD GROWN TREE. (B, C, D). £185.00 inc lunch & tree.* This workshop will be limited to a maximum of 3 participants only, and will have a choice of one of my large field grown specimens. There is also the chance to work on extralarge trees. This workshop will be limited to 2 people only. The fee is £250.00 each. These classes allow plenty of individual attention which people often require.

SEQUOIA AND OTHER REDWOODS. (B, C, D). £42.00 Inc lunch. This workshop will give you an insight into developing bonsai with these magnificent species

MIXED SPECIES WORKSHOP. (A, B, C, D). From £42.00 Inc lunch.* This w/shop is for students who need help refining their own trees, or simply style a tree on the day. Learn how to achieve exhibition standards. if required you can purchase material on the day from a wide choice of species, please call for stock availability.

POTTING/REPOTTING WORKSHOPS. (A, B, C, D). £42.00 Inc lunch. These w/shops are for those who want help in potting or re-potting their bonsai. A range of potting compost/soils and pots will be available to purchase on the day.

ROOT OVER ROCK TECHNIQUES. (A, B, C, D). £42.00 Inc lunch. This workshop will concentrate on showing you how to grow root over rock bonsai and plantings in rock. Demonstrations will be given and students are also invited to bring along their own material although tree and rock can be purchased on the day if you wish to havea go.

SATSUKI AZALEAS AND OTHER FLOWERING SPECIES. (A, B, C, D). From £75.00 Inc lunch & tree. A wide choice of trees will be available to purchase on the day. i.e. Crab apple, Azalea’s, Callicarpa, Winter jasmine, Deciduous holly, Quince, Rosemary etc. We will look at styling, growth development, composts and other techniques to develop and encourage good flowering and fruiting bonsai.

SEASONAL TECHNIQUES USED FOR PINES (B, C, D). From £42.00 Inc lunch*. You have a choice of bringing your own trees along, or alternatively purchasing material on the day, Cultivation, back budding and needle reduction techniques that I use will be fully explained. Cork bark varieties will also be dealt with. If you require stock, please request which species is required and I will do my best to supply. Species available to purchase on the day include: - Black pine, Scots pine, Red pine and White pine priced from £10.00. Some larger sized pines are also available.

SLANTING, LITERATI & WINDSWEPT STYLES. (A, B, C, D). £42.00 Inc lunch. This w/shop will teach you the aspects of these particular bonsai styles. You can choose from many species available on the day. Alternatively if you prefer to work on your own material the fee will be £38.00 Inc.

STYLING HORNBEAM, BEECH & OAK AS BONSAI. (A, B, C, D). £42.00 Inc lunch. This workshop lets you work upon very stocky field grown English Hornbeam or beech. Priced from £45.00 to £695.00. These trees are between 16 and 24 years old. I have been growing these trees pruning them to produce potential superb classic bonsai trees for the future. Japanese Hornbeam also available, Priced at £95.00. The bonsai that I am most frequently asked for is the English oak. The Oaks that I have available are approx 10-15 Years old with good thick trunks, priced from £30.00 – £95.00 for larger trees.

TRADITIONAL HAND-CARVING IN BONSAI STYLING. (B, C, D). £105.00 Inc lunch and carving tool set. This workshop will be devoted to show you how to incorporate carving techniques on bonsai to create driftwood styles and shari, using traditional hand carving tools. A set of RYUGA CT-A wood carving tools will be included in the course fee, see below.

WISTERIA AND OTHER CLIMBERS AS BONSAI. (A, B, C, D). £42.00 Inc lunch

This workshop will be devoted to climbing species suitable for bonsai such as Wisteria, Trachelospermum, honeysuckle, jasmine etc. For those interested there will be a range of wisteria bonsai for sale. Further information can be supplied upon request regarding colour size and price.
