The Stellenbosch University Comprehensive Capacity Enhancement through Engagement with Districts (SUCCEED) Project aims to, through engagement with stakeholders, develop district health learning centres (DHLC) as centres of excellence within South Africa's PEPFAR Focusing for Impact Districts. These DHLC will function as models for quality service delivery, operational research, training and mentorship in district health care. SUCCEED comprises three main activities namely the development and implementation of a model for decentralised training for undergraduate medical and health professions students; strengthening operational research; and capacity building in quality improvement in HIV care in health districts.
The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of Stellenbosch University (SU) currently seeks to appoint a Senior Project Manager to lead the focus on Quality Improvement for District HIV/AIDS Care in the SUCCEED project. The post is based in the Centre for Health Systems and Services Research and Development in the Division of Community Health.

Duties / /
Review, analyse and interpret routine data on quality of HIV treatment and care at national, provincial, district and facility level
Review scientific and other literature on improving the quality of HIV treatment and care in low resource settings
Identify research needed to inform strategies to improve the quality of HIV treatment and care
Plan and coordinate action research on HIV treatment and care quality improvement programmes
Provide support to health management capacity building and/or training activities to support quality improvement for HIV treatment and care
Develop and manage relevant collaborations within districts, provinces and nationally
Management of project personnel, and resources
Communication and reporting on the project
Job Requirements /
MMed Public Health, PhD degree, or equivalent qualification or relevant experience (in health systems research or a related field)
National or International recognition as a health systems researcher
Management experience in an academic/research environment, as well as project management skills
Strong leadership, as well as networking and communication skills
Previous involvement in capacity building and/or training activities in the field of health systems research and health systems strengthening
Recommendation / /
  • Experience in liaising with high-level stakeholders in government
  • Collaboration with leading National, and international health systems research organisations
  • Experience in health information systems and analysis of routine health data
  • An interdisciplinary approach to problem-solving
  • Experience in organising scientific and educational activities in the field of health systems and services research
