Scenario
This unit gives you a real chance to make a difference at your school or college. Your project could increase the sustainability of your school or college, helping them to save energy, reduce waste and maybe even save money.
You must choose a project that is related to one of the eight sustainability-themed gateways:
· Energy and Water
· Food and Drink
· Travel and Traffic
· Purchasing and Waste
· Buildings and Grounds
· Inclusion and Participation
· Local Wellbeing
· Global Dimension
Your tutor will help you to choose a suitable project.
You might want to consider the following possible projects:
· Design a litter bin to help sort different types of waste at your school/college
· Host an eco-fashion to showcase sustainable clothes
· Design a sustainable school uniform
You should work in small groups to carry out your project in sustainability.
Preparation
Before starting this task, each learner should be assigned to a suitable group to work with and should know what the project is that they are going to be carrying out.
Task / AC / EvidenceOne
The aim of this unit is to plan and carry out a project in sustainability. Your project should help to promote and improve sustainability. Before you begin to think about a project, you will need to find out more about sustainability and any recent developments in sustainable development.
Your tutor will provide you with different sources of information about sustainability. Use these to find out more about the eight sustainability gateways.
Using the template below write down at least THREE sources of information that you have looked at and give a short description of the source (e.g. is it a leaflet, website, book etc.)
For each source of information you look at, make a note of any interesting information that you find which you think might help you to plan and carry out a project in sustainability. / A template has been provided to help learners keep a note of their research findings. Learners should be supported with this activity and tutors should provide learners with a variety of different sources of information.
This activity will help to introduce all of the eight gateways to learners and should help them to choose a suitable project.
Two
In your group think about what you want to achieve through your project.
i) In the project plan template provided below, write down:
- the title of your sustainability project
- a brief description of your project
- what you hope to achieve through your project,
providing at least THREE aims and objectives
ii) With your group, decide what activities need to be undertaken to complete the project. Decide which team member will be responsible for each activity and set a timeline.
iii) You will need to think about the risks associated with any of the activities that you are going to carry out as part of your project.
A project plan template has been provided to help you plan your project. / 1.1
1.2
1.3 / Although learners can work in groups to carry out the project, each individual learner must complete a project brief and project plan.
Template provided
Three
Now you’ve done the planning it’s time to get practical and do the project.
Remember to be aware of the possible risks that you have identified and to use protective clothing or equipment when necessary. / 2.1 / Tutor observation to verify that learners have carried out the project safely and effectively.
Four
Well done, you have completed your sustainability project. Now it’s time to think about what your project achieved and how successful it was.
i) Using the template provided below write a short report about your project. To help you write your report, think about the following questions:
How did it go?
What were the results?
Did you meet the objectives you set in your project plan?
ii) Think about the results of your project and give a recommendation linked to them that will help encourage and promote a sustainable approach.
ii) List TWO strengths and TWO weaknesses of your project.
Use the template provided to record the results of your project, your recommendation and the strengths and weaknesses that you have identified. / 3.1
4.1
3.2
4.2 / Templates have been provided to guide the learner in evaluating the success of their project.
Learning Outcomes / Assessment Criteria
To achieve each outcome the learner must demonstrate the ability to:
1 Be able to plan a project to promote sustainability in their place of study / 1.1 Identify a suitable project
1.2 Plan activities to given deadlines
1.3 Identify possible risks
2 Be able to undertake a practical sustainability project / 2.1 Undertake the chosen project
3 Be able to present the results of the sustainability project / 3.1 List the results of the sustainability project
3.1 Make a recommendation
4 Be able to reflect on the sustainability project / 4.1 Reflect on how the project meets its objectives
