Required Text: Applied Calculus by Tan, Brooks/Cole, 2012. Ninth Edition

Course Description: Limits, derivatives of algebraic, exponential, and logarithmic functions, curve sketching, applications to optimizing, and anti-differentiation. F, S, Su.

Course Objective: To provide students with an introduction to calculus as applied to business, economics, the life and physical sciences, and the social sciences. Topics covered will include limit definition of a derivative, derivatives of algebraic, exponential, and logarithmic functions, curve sketching, applications to optimizing, and anti-differentiation.

Prerequisite: Math 130 or Math 130I with a grade of C or better or appropriate placement score.

Students Learning Outcomes: After completing this course, students should be able to:

  • Differentiate between Revenue, Profit and Cost, as well as, Marginal Revenue, Marginal Profit and Marginal Cost functions.
  • Apply the topics of average rate of change and instantaneous rate of change (Derivatives) to economic functions and other real-world applications.
  • Compute the limit definition of a derivative.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of derivative rules for algebraic, exponential, and logarithmic functions.
  • Apply derivatives to find local maxima and minima, inflection points, concavity and global maxima and minima.
  • Construct anti-derivatives for algebraic, exponential and logarithmic functions using a variety of integration techniques.
  • Compute definite integrals and its applications.

Class Attendance: Students are expected to attend class regularly. New information is given each day of class, so it is important to pay attention to the topics covered so you will be prepared for the exams. You are allowed to miss only4classes for T Thclasses. If a student misses more than this, a grade of “F” may be assigned, regardless of the grades earned on tests and quizzes. If you happen to miss a class, it is your responsibility to get the lecture notes from another student in the class.Absences (include leaving class early), whether excused or not excused, do not absolve the student from this responsibility. Attendance is MANDATORY on scheduled exam days. There will be NO make-up tests unless approved ahead of time.Missed tests may be made up only at the discretion of the professor. Under no circumstances will anyone be able to take the test once the exams are returned. If you miss one test for an excused absence, the grade you make on the final exam can be used to replace the missing grade. There will be NO make-up quizzes or in-class homework. No extra credit will be given. This is a more stringent attendance policy than found in the course catalog.
