a) Selection of and agreement on climate scenarios to be used within the project

b) Preparation of a concept how to link the case studies and the European modelling

The focus of this topic was the exchange on available climate projections, which would be the basis for the European modellingand themodelling in each case study.
Main results are:
  • At this stage it is not clear to what extent the results of the European modelling done by CESR can be used for local investigations in the case studies (Water Gap, the modelling tool of CESR, uses a 25 x 25 km scale).
  • It became evident that for different countries and regions different climate projections exist, which can partly be used as input data for the case studies.
  • For the cross-scale and cross-case comparison it is important to find a common basis in the use of scenarios. Out of this, the boundary conditions for the European modelling are resulting.
  • The discussion showed that if we talk about scenarios we have to differentiate between climate scenarios and also socio-economic scenarios. Presumably, most models used for case studies do not incorporate additional socio-economic scenarios. Water-GAP offers the possibility to include such socio-economic scenarios. It was decided to focus on climate change as main factor first and include socio-economic changes and other factors later.
  • The aim to converge case studies and European modelling should not lead to awork overload for any partner.
  • As a main result all partners agreed to the worked out and following To-Do’s:
  • Step 1:A draft table on the availability of scenarios and models is send by CESR to all partners and should be filled in. The question is which data is available at each partner’s organisation. Alterations to the table can be made and information can be added. (to be completed by15 December 2010)
  • Step 2:CESR prepares a summary, selection of scenarios agreed on by all partners (to be completed by15 January 2011)
  • Step 3: run European model (Water GAP) without socio-economic parameters. (to be completed by 15 April 2011)
  • Step 4: exchange of the results and comparison with the results of other available climate projections
  • Step 5: possibly include socio-economic parameters in the European Modelling
  • Especially forthe cross-case and cross-scale comparison a detailed description of the different hydrological and hydrodynamic-numerical models and steering tools used by each partner is necessary (Time scale and space, modelling approaches, etc.). The aim is to start with the description as soon as possible and to finish before the next project meeting.
  • In the following meetings the outline of the case studies shall be discussed.

Organisational issues

Coordination and management of project and work packages

WP 4
All partners underlined that the involvement of stakeholders and practice partners is very important for the success of the case-studies. So the attends are glad, that with the Grands Lacs de Seine one stakeholder is a project partner as well.
To-do:
  • Check out with IWRM-NET if there are any guidelines of how to involve stakeholders (coordinator)
Official project starting date:
  • To be determined once all partners have received their funding agency contract.
Coordination tasks (list to be completed or alternated throughout life time of project):
  • Person in charge: Stephan Theobald, supported by Vanessa Aufenanger
  • Communication between the Consortium and the IWRM-NET project coordination,
  • Communicating all relevant information to the project partners,
  • Preparation of all relevant presentations for IWRM-NET project coordination in accordance with project partners,
  • Organisation and documentation of internal project meetings in cooperation with hosting partner (date, agenda, protocol),
  • Monitoring of research process and coordination of joint reporting.
Internal communication (tools):
  • Emails: Emails forwarded should be marked as fyi (for your information) or (other abbreviations to be added)
  • Contact list  prepared by the coordinator with the support of all partners
  • Establish mailing list
  • internal web space  established by coordinator at the project website for filing relevant documents
  • google docs can be used for joint work on documents
  • Audio conferencing systems from cemagref could be used for intermediate project meeting
External communication tools:
  • Website (English only)  to be developed by coordinator, approved by all
  • Flyer, leaflets (first version in English, translations prepared by each partner)  template to be developed by coordinator
  • Power point presentations  template to be developed by coordinator
  • Newsletter (English only)  template to be developed by coordinator
Find an acronym for the project
  • Discussed were CLIMP WARE and CLIMAWARE. It was decided to use CLIMAWARE (Climate Change Impact on the Management of Water Resources)
It is planned to develop a project Logo
  • To be prepared by coordinator in accordance with all partners
