COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course aims to introduce the basics of the economic integration, European Union’s institutions and decision making, EU policies and economic integration process. The relations between Turkey and EU will also be studied with reference to Customs Union process.

In this regard, the course will be conducted in 3 parts. The first part covers an overview of European Union history, its gradual evolution in economic and political terms as well as of its institutional and decision making structure, the nature and development of the institutions of the European Union. The second part explains the Customs Union Theory and analyses the welfare effects of forming Customs Union with particular emphasis on trade creation and trade diversion. In this part,, the European Economic integration will be studied covering the subjects of European Free Trade Area, Customs Union, Single Market, and European Monetary Union. The last part analyses the EU-Turkey Relations with particular emphasis on Customs Union and its implications. The last part will also include a role-play simulation on “EU-Turkey Relations”. The details of the role- play will be announced on the web site of the course. It is obligatory to attend the role-play which will continue 2 weeks. Te role play constitutes 30% of the final exam grade.

The course will consist of lectures, literature based discussions, and role-play simulation.
