Meeting with Leuven Research and Development Feed-Food-Health (Voka - CCI Leuven)at BrusselsAirport

Leuven Research and Development: K.U.Leuven Research & Development (LRD) is the knowledge and technology transfer office (TTO)of theK.U.Leuven Association. LRD supports researchers in their interaction with industry and in the valorisation of their research results. K.U.Leuven Research & Development (LRD), in close cooperation with the city of Leuven, has created a favourable business climate for high-tech entrepreneurship. In particular, LRD is an active partner in setting up a number of networking initiatives and technology clusters, as well as in planning, setting up and exploiting incubators, science parks and business centres in the Leuven region. K.U.Leuven has also joined forces with the city of Tienen to develop a science park on the Feed Food Health campus. This will be a thematic industrial zone where only research-oriented and high-tech companies, related to the food sector in its widest meaning, can establish themselves.

The Delhaize Group, with headoffice in Brussels, exists since 140 years and is one of the worldwide leaders in food distribution through supermarkets. The group is active on 3 continents and in 7 countries : Belgium, the United States,the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg, Nordrein-Westfalen (Germany), Greece, Romania and Indonesiaand has a turnover of 19 billion euro wordwide in 2008. Its innovative techniques in the cold logistics chain are remarkable.

10.00Visit of one of the food auctions in Limburg (Borgloon)

Both vegetables and fruit are brought to the auction by the growers the day before the sale. The next morning, the products are sold in the sale room with the clock. After the sale at the auction, the products are loaded as quickly as possible into refrigerated lorries. This keeps the products fresh until they reach the shops. At that point, they are still actually less than one day old.

Visit to Katoen Natie, a large logistics company (in the port region) with a wide range of services, including experiences in working for the agrifood sector and business relations with Turkey in that sector.

Demonstration of innovative logistical services for agrifood producers, exporters and importers. Brief meeting with SMEs – clients explaining how and why they make use of such specialised logistical providers.
