World-class interpreters and translators are central to everything we do, and the language services across the European Institutions have a crucial role to play in strengthening communication, developing policy and helping citizens understand how the EU's initiatives affect them.

-EU Careers 2012 graduate ‘AD’ selection procedure for linguists is NOW open for conference interpreters and translatorswith the following languages:

  • Conference Interpreters:Danish (DA), German (DE), English (EN), Slovak (SK)
  • Translators:Estonian (EE), Irish(GA), Latvian (LV), Portuguese (PT)

-These profiles are intended for university graduates with excellent language skills and trained to work as conference interpreters and translators.

-For each profilea perfect command, both written and spoken, of the language of the competition (mother tongue or equivalent knowledge) is needed and a thorough knowledge of several official EU languages.

-For every linguist job profile, language skills and general and specific professional abilities are tested thoroughly. For an overview of the required education, skills and professional experience and the stages in selection procedures for these profiles see:

–These competitions are open to EU citizens who meet the requirements of the mentioned job profiles laid down in the respective Notices of Competition.

–The selection procedure for each profile is described in detail in the Notice of Competition (duties involved, eligibility criteria, languages required, types of tests in each stage for the profile) and the application form can be found on the website of the European Personnel Selection Office:

–Applications for these competitions must be submitted through this website.

Deadline for applications

Conference Interpreter: 11.00 BST(12.00 midday CEST) on August 7, 2012.
Translator:11.00 BST(12.00 midday CEST) on August 14, 2012.

–Applicants for theinterpreter or the translator profile can assess the likelihood of being successful in a competition, by taking the compulsory self assessment testbefore filling out the application form.

–The assessment process takes place in two stages after the application form is submitted. Firstly there are computer-based tests, specific for each profile, which can be taken in one of the test centres in the 27 EU Member States.

–Secondly, for the top applicants from the first stage, there will be an Assessment Centre designed to assess general and profile-specific competencies and skills in depth.

–Applicants who are amongst the very best and who pass all stages of a competition are placed on a reserve list from which the EU institutions recruit as and when they are needed. The whole process takes approximately 9 months.

–The aim of a competition is not to fill a specific post, but to constitute a reserve pool for recruitment.If recruited, successful applicants will work as permanent EU officials in Brussels or Luxembourg.
