Article I

State the name of the organization-for example, "The name of this organization shall beEthos magazine, student general interest magazine for Iowa State University."

Article II

  • Section One:
    Ethos magazine provides in-depth reporting on the culture of Iowa State. A non-profit student media with an online presence and completely independent student direction.
  • Ethos magazine has a commitment to strong, objective and relevant journalism.
  • Section Two: “Ethos magazine” abides by and supports established Iowa State University policies, State and Federal Laws.

Article III

"Membership shall be open to all registered students at Iowa State University, but at the discretion of Ethos editors and directors.” Ethos does not discriminate on the basis of race,color, age, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, sex, marital status, disability or status as a U.S.Veteran.

Ethos enables membership based on editor-in-chief's discretion. Interviews, resumes, sample portfolios may be needed before membership is granted.

Article II Purpose & Goals

  • Section One: Provide a general statement about the purpose and goals of the organization, as well as the type and scope of the organization's activities. This is also an appropriate place to mention the organization's affiliation with other groups, if any (for example, if the group is a chapter of a national organization).
  • Section Two: “Ethos magazine” abides by and supports established Iowa State University policies, State and Federal Laws.

Article III Membership

Provide a general statement about membership eligibility, standards, and requirements. For example, "Membership shall be open to all registered students at Iowa State University.” Iowa State University does not discriminate on the basis of race,color, age, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, sex, marital status, disability or status as a U.S.Veteran.

The membership selection process, types of membership, and procedures for disciplining and/or removing members should also be outlined here if not already appearing in the bylaws. NOTE: Recognized student organizations at Iowa State University are required to be non-discriminatory in membership unless otherwise permitted by applicable federal law (for example, Title IX). As such, you should review your constitution to ensure that it does not contain discriminatory language or provisions.

Article IV Officers

Ethos is run by the editor-in-chief (who also serves as president and publisher). Each editor-in-chief may expand and contract their list of editorial and directorial positions available by semester, year, or sooner if needed depending on demand and focus. Staff adviser may also intervene on this. Editor-in-chief is hired in conjunction by faculty adviser and current editors.

"The officers of this organization must meet the following requirements:

(a) Have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) as stated below and meet that minimum GPA in the semester immediately prior to the election/appointment, the semester of election/appointment and semesters during the term of office. For undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, the minimum GPA is 2.00. In order for this provision to be met, at least six hours (half-time credits) must have been taken for the semester under consideration.

(b) Be in good standing with the university and enrolled: at least half time (six or more credit hours), if an undergraduate student (unless fewer credits are required to graduate in the spring and fall semesters) during the term of office, and at least half time (four or more credits), if a graduate level student (unless fewer credits are required in the final stages of their degree as defined by the Continuous Registration Requirement) during their term of office.

(c) Be ineligible to hold an office should the student fail to maintain the requirements as prescribed in (a) and (b)."

1. President Editor-in-chief

• Preside over all meetings

• Represent organization on campus

• Ensure that the organization is operating in conformity with the standards set forth by Iowa State University and

Student Activities Center

• Maintain communication with organization adviser

Maintain an accurate record of all organization meetings and post for members

• Maintain membership directory

• Correspond when necessary with University administration and other recognized organizations

• Solicits additional funding if needed from the Student Government

2. Managing Editor

• Preside over meetings in the absence of the President

• Schedule meetings/events with appropriate University offices

Also will Serve as treasurer in absence of Business Manager.

• Maintain accurate record of organization transactions

• Develop organization budget and present to membership for ¾ vote

• Cosign organization checks along with the Adviser

3. Creative Director

•Guide the art and photo departments.

4. Advertising Director

Responsible for fundraising, oversee ad dept.

5. Adviser

• Maintain communication and meet with officer(s) regularly

• Awareness and approval of financial expenditures

• Ensure that the organization is operating in conformity with the standards set forth by Iowa State University and

Editor in chief elected after interviewing with outgoing EIC and Adviser. Following that position, they are responsible for selection and approval of all other officers. EIC has the last word. This process takes place in Spring, and over summer into the beginning of the fall semester if needed, or at any other time deemed necessary.

Removal of Officers or Adviser

Officers or advisers may be removed from office by ½ vote of the other officers and ¾ of the general membership if actions are deemedinappropriate by the membership. The officer is permitted to speak before the Publication Board and the general membershipabout the charges made concerning his/her performance. Editor in chief has ultimate decision, regardless of the rest of the students’ opinion, unless they are the one whose membership is in question.

Replacement of Officer or Adviser

If an officer or adviser is removed the replacement procedure is the same as the election procedure described above. It shall take place at the first meeting following the removal of the previous officer/adviser.

Duties of Adviser:
• Maintain communication and meet with officer(s) regularly
• Awareness and approval of financial expenditures
• Ensure that the organization is operating in conformity with the standards set forth by Iowa State University and Student Activities Center
Dates of Election/Appointment and Method:
The term of for the adviser will be one full year (elected in August to the following August). The adviser will be selected by the officers. A majority vote is needed for an adviser to be selected, unless Editor in chief overrides.

Article V. Finances

The editor-in-chief, managing editor or business manager shall be responsible for finances unless other decided by staff or faculty adviser. Advertising staff may receive stipends from money raised in ad sales, money may also be used for stipends to other staff but is at adviser and editor-in-chief's discretion.

NOTE: All recognized student organizations at Iowa State University must include the following statement (or its equivalent) in their constitution:

"All monies belonging to this organization shall be deposited and disbursed through a bank accountestablished for this organization at the Campus Organizations Accounting Office and/or approved institution/office (mustreceive authorization via Campus Organizations Accounting Office). All funds must be deposited within 48 hours aftercollection. The Adviser to this organization must approve and sign each expenditure before payment."

Article VI. Amendments & Ratification

Constitution may be edited at any time editorial staff chooses upon majority vote by those present at a meeting.
Amended or ratified constitution will be submitted within 10 days to Student Activities Center for approval.
