Ethics and Religious Cultures – 500 (Sec. V/ Grade 11)

Dr. S. Jafralie:

The Ethics and Religious (ERC) Culture program is an avant-garde way to examine the world. Using a secular and thematic approach, students are able to learn about themselves. Additionally, students are encouraged to critique and challenge their worldview. Concurrently, they should also explore other modes of thinking. As a department, we strive to offer every student the opportunity to develop their minds and spiritual understanding.

Ethics and Religious Cultures Competencies and Evaluation:

Competency #1- Reflects on ethical questions: Reflecting on ethical questions enables students to examine the significance of various types of conduct, as well as the values and norms that guide members of a society with respect to community life

Competency #2 - Demonstrates an understanding of the phenomenon of religion:The goal is to encourage students to understand the various forms of religious expression, grasp the complexity of the phenomenon and gain perspective on the various dimensions: experiential, historical, doctrinal, moral, ritual, literary, artistic, social or political

Expectations:

-Class notes completed by the next class in the case of an absence

-Student seek out missing assignments in the case of an absence or a long term absence from class

-Deadlines must be respected unless there is a family or medical emergency

-Extension sought out in advance of deadline within 48 hours of the deadline by email, discussion with the teacher or parental letter – Email:

-In the rare cases that late assignments are accepted, they are accepted after discussion with the teacher and will incur a loss of mark. Any assignments later than a week will not be accepted except in extraordinary circumstances. Late assignments are accepted at 7% per day to a maximum of 49% for a week afterward the assignment may not be accepted or marked at all.

-Positive participation

Parental Advisory:

Some topics and materials may be sensitive, controversial and delicate. If there are any concerns in regards to participation and/or the material; parents may withdraw their child’s participation from an activity at any time. Parents will be notified in writing of upcoming sensitive topics and its approach. Parents will be asked to return the form should they have objection to their child's participation.
