SHAC Meeting September 7, 2016

Meeting called to order At 3:30.

Members present: Stefanie Miller, Edee Stephens, Kim Parker, Leona Callaway, Jennifer LeBouef, and Pam Hutto

Introduction of new members

Ethel Means expressed interest in joining SHAC, approved.

Read and approved minutes from May meeting with revisions.

Reviewed and approved of SHAC Wellness Plan

District Reports

Nutrition

Reinforce seating areas for parents that wish to eat with their child.

Reinforce seating arrangements of children with food allergies.

Student food allergy alerts were discussed with food service, aides, and faculty.

Health Services

Introduce SB 66 regarding stocked Epinephrine on campuses.

·  Discussed with Mr. Kendall Smith, Superintendent and approved on 9/08/16.

·  Dr.’s orders received from Dr. Russell Perry, M.D.

·  Epinephrine will be provided by EpiPen4schools.com and free of charge.

·  General guidelines discussed.

Health Awareness Week

Flu Prevention Information sent home to parents went out on 8/31

§  Little Kids Get the Flu Too!

Nurse Pam will teach and discuss importance germ prevention grades PK-5th

·  covering your cough or sneeze

·  educate students on good handwashing techniques.

Flu Clinic hosted by Walgreens in Silsbee on 9/16

Vision and Hearing Screens in the month of September/October-(Grades PK, KG, 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and all new students)

Stroke Scans Plus will be providing screening to evaluate stroke and vascular disease on 9/30. Employees and students are welcome to participate in the screenings.

Physical/Health Education

All staff members have received Bloodborne Pathogens and Allergy/Anaphylaxis training through Eduhero.

Nurse Pam has informed the staff of students with allergies and other medical concerns.

First Response Teams have been formed for each campus in the event of a medical emergency. FRT team members are CPR/AED First Aid certified through American Heart Association.

Counseling, Psychological, and Social Services

Red Ribbon Week planned for October 10-14

Breast Cancer Awareness/Pink Out scheduled for October 18

Anti-Bullying Awareness scheduled for October 19

Family and Community Involvement
Mr. Ford, principal would like the students to be involved in a blanket and coat drive in November. All donated items will go to those in need.

Information obtained after SHAC meeting

Addendum: Tamara Harrison, PTO president expressed an interest in planning and organizing our Red Ribbon Week after our SHAC meeting. Discussed and approved per Mrs. Parker.

Mrs. Hubbard reported that her nutrition and wellness classes are currently exploring food labels, reviewing all components of food labels, and determining how they affect our bodies. They will also explore food allergies, portion sizes, proteins, fats, carbs, and sugars.

Obesity, diabetes, and eating disorders will be discussed later in the year.
