About Project

ESSENCE (Enabling translation of Science to Service to ENhance Depression CarE) is a multi-component, multi-country program. The long-term goal of ESSENCE is to bridge the science to service gap and strengthen an existing collaborative network of institutions in South Asia by generating knowledge on cost-effective implementation approaches for scaling up of evidence-based interventions for mental disorders, and building capacity in a range of key stakeholders to enhance the conduct of implementation research, the dissemination of its findings, and the uptake of this evidence in policy and programs, ultimately resulting in reduction of treatment gap for mental disorders.

ESSENCE has two core components: The Scaling Up research component and the Capacity Building component. The research component focuses on the scaling up of a brief psychological treatment for depression delivered by Non-Specialist Health Workers as a core component of an evidence-based collaborative stepped care strategy to integrate mental health in routine health care platforms. The aim is to improve the outcomes of persons with moderate to severe depression attending routine primary health care facilities in Madhya Pradesh, India. A collaborative network of institutions in India, Nepal, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, along with strategic partners in the USA and the UK, will implement the capacity building component, which is to conduct, exchange, and utilise implementation research with the ultimate goal of reducing the treatment gap for depression and other mental disorders in these South Asian countries.

Sangath seeks to appoint the Research Fellow who will be based at Bhopal and will coordinate assist PI and Project Director in conducting various research activities. S/he will contribute in development of guides, data collection and analysis in both the trials as per trail protocol.

This project is scheduled for four to five years, ending on May 31, 2022.The positionwill be hired on an annual basis with renewal depending on continued funding and satisfactory performance.

Job Description

Main job responsibilities of Research Fellow will be –

  1. S/he will be a key member of the ESSENCE research team. S/he will be based at Bhopal and will report to Project Director (ESSENCE) and Principal Investigator
  2. Implementation of ESSENCE research activities in as per protocol.
  3. Contribute in development of qualitative study protocol, development of guides and data collection and analysis in both the trials.
  4. Drafting research outputs such as research summary, analysis tables and reports.
  5. Regular communication and follow up with other research team members to plan on various research activities.
  6. Supervise data collection process by filed staff. Provide feedback for quality improvement.
  7. Assist ESSENCE research team in developing and finalizing research instruments.
  8. Ensure fair and ethical standards are maintained in the project.
  9. Any other project related duties assigned by the supervisor.

Desired Candidate Profile

The following criteria are essential:

  • Post Graduate in psychology, relevant social or health sciences. Candidates with qualification in the field of mental health would be given preference.
  • Experience in coordination and management of a public health programme (preferably a research programme).
  • Fluency in spoken and written Hindi and English
  • Willingness to be based at Bhopal and ready to take up extensive filed work in remote areas of the district.

Desirable criteria are:

  • Experience in scientific writing.
  • Proficiency in the use of word processing and email
  • Well verse in using modern information technology tools such as cloud computing, online project management systems etc.
  • Well verse in qualitative and quantitative data analysis software such as Nvivo, STATA etc.

Remuneration and contractual duration

Remuneration for this position will be commensuratewithqualificationsandexperience however the maximum consolidated monthly payment will be around Rs 40,000/- in the first year. The initial appointment will be made for three months from the date of joining, with renewal up to one year based on a performance review.
