Essay Assignment – Romeo & Juliet

In Act 5 Scene 3 of Romeo and Juliet, Prince Escalus tells the mourners, “Some shall be pardoned, and some punished.” (Line 533)
Write a literary essay in which you persuade the reader/grader which character(s) Prince Escalus should have pardoned and which character(s) deserved to be punished.
Required – a paragraph of introduction which ends with a clear thesis that states who should be pardoned AND who should be punished.
Required - SIX (6) quotations from the play, correctly cited.
Required – at least TWO 2 body paragraphs (or 3 body paragraphs) which begin with a CLAIM stating who should be pardoned AND a different character who should be punished.
OPTION #1 – You may write 2 body paragraphs with 3 quotations in each body paragraph. One body paragraph must explain which character should be pardoned; the other paragraph must explain which character should be punished.
OPTION #2 – You may choose to write THREE body paragraphs with TWO QUOTATIONS in each paragraph. If you choose this option, TWO body paragraphs will be about TWO different characters who should be pardoned; a third body paragraph should be about a character who should be punished.
OPTION #3 – You may choose to write 3 body paragraphs with TWO QUOTATIONS in each paragraph. If you choose option #3, you would write two separate paragraphs about TWO characters who should be punished; a third paragraph would be about a character who should be pardoned.
Required – The conclusion paragraph must begin with the thesis which reviews all three body paragraphs. Close with a memorable and powerful punchline that makes the essay sound finished. Make sure the last sentence summarizes the theme as your entire essay.
Required – All body paragraphs must follow the claim sheet format. Be prepared to highlight. Include TRANSITION WORDS !
SET UP should name the SPEAKER OF THE YELLOW QUOTATION. To whom is the speaker saying the quote? Where/when is the quotations spoken? What is the quotation about? This information belongs BEFORE THE QUOTATION! (PINK WAVES)
Required – 5 vocabulary words, one from each act.
Required – One compound sentence (orange) with a fanboy and comma. The sentence MUST include two independent clauses.
Required – One compound sentence (blue) using a semi-colon between two independent clauses.
Required – Another compound sentence (green) using a semi colon and a conjunctive adverb between two independent clauses.
