52ndRodings Rally - 2008
Epping Forest Outdoor Group
Dear Competitors,
Thank you for taking part in the 52nd Rodings Rally.ByFriday 14th Novemberwe had received registrations for80 teams, 10 fewer than last year but sufficient to make it a competitive event!
Competitors in the 10 checkpoint event were required to find nine checkpoints in the forest, and return to the final checkpoint at High Beach Village Hall within 8 hours. 17 teams achieved this within the time limit, congratulations again to Suffoc who nipped round the course in 3hours and 49 minutes. They were almost an hour ahead of the team who bagged second place – Cam Racers 3.
The 10 checkpoint group trophy (the 3 highest placed teams from the same organisation) was wonyet again this year by The Alchemists whose top 3 teams each discovered all 10 checkpoints in a total time of 17 hours and 21 minutes. Only 3 minutes behind were the Cam Racers, and in third position were previous group trophy winners, Rayleigh Rockets.
Requirements for the YHA trophy were changed this year. Previously this trophy was awarded to the 3 highest placed teams in the 10 checkpoint event from a YHA group but we were unable to award this in 2007 due to insufficient teams from a single YHA group. From 2008 this trophy will be awarded to the highest placed 10 checkpoint team from a YHA group. This year the trophy goes to South Middlesex YHA group team 2.
The 5 checkpoint event, where teams were required to locate checkpoints 1, 3, 5 and 6, as well as the village hall, was won this year byNight Crawlers in an amazing 1 hour and 53 minutes. Well done &congratulations, the Vic Halstead 5 checkpoint trophy will be wingingits way to you very soon!
The 5 checkpoint group trophy (for the 3 highest placed teams from the same organisation competing in the 5 checkpoint event) goes this yearto Essex Stragglerswhose 3 teams – Undertakers, Parental Concern and Go West - located 15 checkpoints in 10 hours and 26 minutes.
Finally, the Suffolk Orienteering Club trophy for “Best Endeavour” goes to ‘Arlow ‘Innit, whose 2 man team found 5 out of 10 checkpoints having lost a pair of glasses at checkpoint 2. Amazingly on Sunday morning this intrepid team managed to find their way back to the site of checkpoint 2 (its inhabitants having long since departed) and located the missing spectacles. Well done!
Trophy winners will be contacted shortly to confirm delivery arrangements.
The solutions to the clues are enclosed with this report.
As stated on the Rodings Rally information sheet sent out with the entry form, 25p out of every each competitor’s entry fee received is donated to charity. This year we will be donating at least £60; the specific charity to which the donation is to be sent will be agreed at our AGM in January.
Hope you all had a good time and thanks to those of you who sent your comments after the event. Any feedback – good or bad – is welcome!
We are still awaiting confirmation of the date of Rodings Rally 2009. It is likely to take place either on the weekend of Saturday 14th/Sunday 15th November, or on Saturday 21st / Sunday 22nd November – we will keep you posted on this!
